ColorTone Tinted Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

About This Item

Traditional finishes made simple! Ideal for touch-up work, or for finishing an entire instrument. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water.

Formulated specifically for musical instruments. Tinted and sunbursted nitrocellulose lacquer finishes never go out of style. Now you can finish your instruments in beautiful traditional colors that enhance the wood grain, without complicated spray equipment.
13-ounce spray cans.

ColorTone® Tinted Aerosol Guitar Lacquer can be sprayed over smooth unfinished wood; over sanded basecoats of grain filler; over ColorTone nitrocellulose Sanding Sealer, and over ColorTone Stains. Spray additional coats of ColorTone Clear Aerosol Guitar Lacquer for a hard, durable finish with a deep gloss.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a finish. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns however, and more sanding of the clear topcoats may be needed for a level finished surface. Tinted coats should not be sanded.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal stained or unstained wood before the color coats or clear topcoats are applied. At least one can of Sanding Sealer and 4-6 cans of lacquer will usually finish a complete guitar.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

If you follow the directions, you’ll get an amazing finish. I went with the Amber to try to get that aged look and the color is so rich and vivid. I’ve grown to expect only top quality from the Mac!!! You can’t go wrong with this company.

Pefect match

I purchased Stew Mac's Cherry Tinted Lacquer to refinish a neck repair that I did on a Taylor Solid body. To get the best results I sanded the mahogany neck down to bare wood and refinished it using the Cherry Tinted Lacquer. After the tint I topped it with Behlen Clear Lacquer. I am very impressed with the final results. It was a perfect match and the repair is nearly unnoticeable. The aerosol can has really good spray pattern that makes it easy lay down even coats.

Great lacquer: true color

By

I have lengthy experience with rattlecan guitar finishes, and Stew Mac's lacquer works really well. It is firm and hard, unlike the plastic-y lacquers many other brands deliver. It sets up fast and hardens way faster than most -- no fingerprinting, rubbing, or sagging. It's easy to avoid runs, and easy to build a great thin coat. Be careful of color selection, as they are as they appear onscreen. Vintage Ambet is pretty yellow when sprayed over light wood. Great for sunbursts, requires care on a maple neck.

Colortone Tinted Lacquers

Built many acoustic guitars, but never had attempted a “Sunburst” top finish. Ordered up some Colortone Tinted Lacquers, watched videos online, practiced on scrap wood, and then went for it.
Very happy with the results using these products!

Great Paint, Not Enough Color Choices

By

Touching up a damaged finish on an old red translucent finish G&L, I thought I'd try the Cherry Red. The first several coats actually seemed to be quite close to the original color, but as I built up the finish with more coats I realized it was a few shades darker. It'll have to do, but ...

It would be nice if you offered more than four colors. I could use a less deep red, also why not a few blues and greens?

Certainly a high quality lacquer, and I have no problems with the spray nozzle at all. Nice even spray so far.

Really good, but needs nozzle upgrade

By

Verified Buyer

I’ve probably used about 20-30 cans of Color Tone at this point and I love the paint, but for these prices, the paint needs to come with the upgraded nozzle that currently has to be purchased separately for $1.08 a piece with a 6-pack minimum. Having the good nozzle makes a massive difference, even for sanding sealer.

As a guy with past experience buying plastic nozzles for other applications, I would be shocked if the nozzles were more than $0.15 To $0.20 each from a wholesaler, even for quantities less than 1000.

StewMac, please make your lacquer a better value for your customers and fans by upgrading the nozzles. It will only make people love this paint more, boost word of mouth recommendations and drive more sales. With those sales increases, you might even be able to invest in formulating more color options leading to even more customers stoked on your product. Thanks.

Color tone tinted Lacquer

This was the 1st time I've used StewMac's ColorTone tinted Lacquer and I have to say the color is spot on for the Red Mahogany on the Gibson SG. After a lot of prep before spraying on the sealer coat and taking my time between coats. Sanding if needed between coats. The color and beautiful high gloss finish came out probably better than factory. I highly recommend StewMac's Lacquer products for a professional looking DIY finish.
