StewMac Tape Op Delay Pedal Kit

About This Item

The warm sound of tape delay in a pedal
Now you can get the unmistakable sound of an analog tape delay with the reliability and flexibility of a digital circuit.

We love analog tape delays! The raw, warm, and unique sound compliments the tone of electric guitars so well. The only problem is that tapes wear out, and analog delays can be inconsistent and difficult to dial in to the perfect sound for you. We set out to take the things we loved about classic delays and create a circuit that would be easy to use and sound killer too.

Don't buy your next pedal—build it!
We worked hard and finally developed a delay that rivaled our favorite tape machines and priceless analog pedals. No cold, sterile repeats here—the dry signal path is all analog! With 30ms to 625ms of delay you can cover everything from rockabilly slapback to deep experimental soundscapes all in one great sounding package.

With knobs for time, repeats, mix, and tone it's easy to dial in subtle or more extreme delays. The tone knob gives you complete control over the sound—you'll never have to deal with the dark and muddy sounds that ruin other delay pedals.

It's more than just a schematic
We include everything you need to build your new pedal:

  • Top quality components from resistors to switch
  • Road-worthy rugged metal enclosure with all holes pre-drilled
  • Bare or powder coated white finish
  • 3PDT breakout board for low noise
  • Input, output, and power jacks rear mounted for easy cable routing
  • True bypass switch
  • Custom printed labels

Gives the sound I wanted

Before I purchased the pedal kit I read the other reviews and noticed that some buyers had an issue with the knobs in the kit. The problem was that with some of the knobs the grub screw was missing therefore making the knob unusable. I thought, as these reviews were some time ago, StewMac would have addressed this situation and proceeded in ordering the kit. When it arrived, here in Australia, I opened the kit it up and guess what, two of the Red knobs had their grub screws missing.Issue not fixed, I guess poor manufacture quality control. This did not deter me and I went ahead and built the pedal, this I really enjoyed. Apart from the knob situation the pedal looked really great. Plugged the pedal in and the sound was magic to my ears. As I love playing The Shadows music, and with a few adjustments made, the sound I wanted was really great and I love using this pedal. Thank you SteMac

Lots of great sounds!

This was my first PCB kit, but I was able to follow the directions and put this together over a few evenings. The directions are clear and make it really easy to assemble without confusion. The sounds on this delay pedal range from a slap-back reverb with the time turned all the way down to long David Gilmour style echos all the way to the right. Turn the repeats knob past about 12 to get some deep and spacey sounds, or all the way to the right for crazy feedback and other fun effects. I wasn't able to detect a noticeable difference with the Tone knob, but that might also just be an error on my side in the soldering. This is a good pedal with a lot of options for your sound!

This is my second pedal kit. The first was the 808 kit. The delay kit was a challenge do to the size of the components. I found it necessary to use a dim and magnifying glasses the identify and solder the connections. I found the instructions to be an excellent aid and following the step by step produced great results. The next kit for me is the fan tremolo.

Works well.

Board is a little tougher than I expected. Some leads had a little oxidation. Not sure what this means or if it's relevant.

This product was reasonable to build and does what it's supposed to do.

Fun Project

Second pedal I have built from StewMac. Fun project except one of the knobs was missing a set screw. Had to make one but still would have been nice to have all the required parts.

Works for Me!

I’ve been an electronics repair/bench technician for a lot of years but this was my first kit assembly in a loooong time!
The kit arrived in a timely fashion and I began to assemble it right away. Though the parts were numerous and tiny, the online assembly directions were excellent!
All the parts were there and only one of them was defective. It was only the nut that holds the LED housing, but I quickly found a replacement just lying around my shop!
Speaking of the LED, I thought it was a little too blue-white-bright for my eyes. I bought an unpainted version of the kit and painted the housing red. I will likely swap out the LED for a clear red one to match!
The controls behaved pretty much as I expected. The “mix” control it’s totally dry at one end but not totally wet at the other which is a minor issue; i’m basically going to be running synthesizer leads through it.
The output has just the right amount of ‘muddiness’ as one might expect from an analog tape. You might wanna wait till the very end before applying the labels; mine ended up being a little misaligned, but no worries.
All in all, a great experience! Thanks StewMac!

Having Fun...!

This is my first pedal build and so far so good. I’m actually having fun putting this together. My only issue is since I’m 65yrs young, my eyes aren’t as good as they used to be in my 20’s obviously, and some of the resistors are extremely small and it’s difficult to read the color codes. Fortunately I used a magnifying glass to read most of them, and I a digital volt meter (DVM) to check each resistor and verify the color code. The other small issue is the 4 knobs included with the kit are missing the ever so tiny set screws needed to lock them in place on the pots when the pedal is completed. I will deal with this small issue when I cross that bridge. Overall I am very happy with the kit and look forward to completing it and showing off. I highly recommend these kits to anyone who wants to build a kit. The instructions are second to none and you can’t go wrong.......!??
