Wilkinson Modern-S Guitar Kit

About This Item

Build the super guitar you've always wanted
Why buy a Superstrat when you can build your own? Renowned hardware guru Trev Wilkinson designed this kit for the ultimate combination of tone and playability.

If you feel limited by traditional Strat guitars, this is the kit for you. Wilkinson supercharged this kit with the best of everything. Designed from the ground up, this kit is a modern player's dream. With versatile pickups, locking tuners, and a brilliantly designed trem system, you'll build a guitar that can do anything.

New to building? Save hundreds with our Complete Building Set
We've taken care of everything. Get the kit together with all the tools and supplies to completely build and fully finish your new guitar. See set details below.

Upgraded for today's player
Wilkinson kept the traditional Strat looks, but made real improvements to the classic models. The thinner neck is a fast shape, and the 10" radius is much more comfortable to play. The larger frets also make bending and vibrato a breeze. Also, the truss rod adjustment is at the headstock making setups much easier. No one likes taking off a neck for just a simple tweak.

The heart of the kit is the premium grain-matched center jointed 2-piece body. The universal pickup routing is crisp and clean, and the wood is smooth and ready to finish. With our series of ColorTone Finishing Supplies, you can make it look exactly like you've always pictured it.

The Maple neck right out of the box feels smooth and fits tight in the pocket. It's pre-fretted, inlayed, and ready of fine tune to your perfect shape. The peghead has a very familiar shape—it's ready for you to customize and dial in the exact curves and contours to match any vintage model you feel inspired by.

Custom pickups and pro parts
Each and every electronic component is totally upgraded. The pickups are Wilkinson's custom-wound WHS single coils in the neck and middle positions and a WHZB humbucker in the bridge. These high output pickups are balanced for great sound in every position.

The single coils have Alnico V magnets with a few extra winds for extra power, and the special wind of the ceramic humbucker doesn't sacrifice tone for output. Everything is pre-wired with premium wiring and professional-grade CTS pots and CRL switch, saving you hours of work.

High performance hardware for effortless playing
The hardware upgrades are where this kit really shines. The bridge is Wilkinson's latest version of his amazing WVS tremolo. The knife edges and locking saddles return to pitch with amazing accuracy, and the feel is comfortable under your palm. The steel block also features staggered holes for an incredible feel. The Graph Tech nut keeps the guitar in tune even when you lean into the trem. And you get locking tuners too!

Your kit includes everything you'll need:
  • Finely sanded 2-piece center joined Alder body
  • Neck pocket, pickup cavities and bridge holes routed and drilled
  • Shaped Maple neck with installed truss rod
  • 25.5" (647mm) scale length, 10" radius

Can't go wrong with this kit

This is a high quality kit. The neck was very straight and fit perfect into the body pocket. The wood is near finished and only needed a quick once over before painting. All of the hardware is high quality. The locking tuners and provided nut are excellent. The Wilkinson floating tremolo came out great in the end. But the instructions are confusing - says not to adjust / adjust the saddles. I found alternate instructions on the internet. Level the bridge first with high E & low E at right height, then adjust the saddles for the rest of the strings. Came out nice and stays in tune when using the tremolo and bending is very smooth and comfortable. The pre-drilled holes for the tremolo claw were a bit too wide, but it all came out with no issues. The kit does not come with a string tree and needs one for the high E & B strings. The pickups are as good as any other Strat I have and this guitar sounds awesome in a Fender Champion amp on all of the settings. Plays jazz, rock, blues, funk & metal. The finish is Stewmac spray lacquer, gloss black & aged clear, clear gloss finish. Did not use grain filler and I like how it came out with some grain character showing thru.

It's a nice kit

First thing: I didn't look close enough at the pictures, so completely my fault: the front S-style jack isn't there, it's on the side. Not a problem, but if you want an exact Strat replica, be aware.
It's a nice guitar kit. Everything is a solid product. The Alder was good wood without any obvious knots, stains, or large blemishes. There were a few small blemishes that are easily filled. I bought it on sale at StewMac and I don't feel that it wasn't worth the price. There are certainly cheaper kits that would require much more work to make usable. I would have liked to be able to select the color of the hardware, but it's cheap enough to buy the alternate pieces.

Very happy with this build

This is a very high quality kit. The body and neck are good quality. The frets were already leveled. Only had to tap down a few frets. The body was sanded and only needed a quick once over. Did not use any grain filler, and the black gloss has some light grain character to make it unique. Took some trial and error to get the floating Wilkinson tremolo set. The instructions are confusing. Found additional instructions from Wilkinson on the internet. Needed to get the bridge level first, then set the action and arch on the saddles. The pre-drilled holes for the tremolo claw are a bit too wide, but it all works great and stays in tune. The kit did not come with a string tree, and it needs one on the E & B strings. Otherwise a great kit for learning the ropes on a modern Strat. All 3 pickups have good tone thru all effects on a fender champion 100 amp.

Great Kit for Almost All Skill Levels

I chose this as my first kit build. Depending on how you choose to paint, stain, and finish the guitar could add days to months to your project.
But someone with basic skills could carefully assemble this kit in just a few days, and have a one-of-a-kind instrument.

Pros:
- The hard work is done for you. I can't say this enough. No CNC or Routing. Almost no sanding for me. Pick guard is pre-wired. Body and Neck are matched and fit GREAT. Hardware is all very good quality.
- Shape and Style make this easy to upgrade. My pickups and Strap Locks went in no problem.
- You can make a quality instrument with basic electronic skills.

Cons:
- I think this would be specific to my Kit, but my frets are rolled in a little too far on one side, so my high E drops of the fretboard frequently when fretting. I’ve had to get used to playing very differently on Treble side. This is a big problem for me, since I’m looking at refretting the neck, or buying a new one.
- The instructions leave a bit to be desired. They are slightly out of order (make sure to line up your neck and bridge first), and they miss some smaller steps altogether.

Overall, it’s a great kit.
But if you need a perfect guitar for the same price range, you may want to look for a factory-assembled guitar.

Great delivery time

8 days from the order to delivery in Australia. Pretty good. Kit looks clean but I'm beginning to realise that I'm going to have to invest in a bunch more tools:)

Great kit for first build

By

Verified Buyer

This was my first build. The kit was final sanded and all I had to do was seal it prior to applying finish. The pictures don't show the sunburst effect I put on. I preferred more black to mimic the current Player series. I replaced the supplied pick guard with a Perloid one I had. The pick ups & electronics are very good.
Pros: Easy to build. All parts fit with no alterations needed. Good electronics. Good pre-drilled holes where needed.
Cons: No pre-drilled hole for string ground wire. Back plate needs to be bigger. Very little room for error when drilling back plate holes. Needs better instructions for setting up the bridge. I was missing the high E string in the strings that came in the kit.

Just delivered in under 3 days from StewMac to the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Impressive.
Will let you know how the build comes along, but on first impressions kit looks very nice indeed.
