Grover A-Style 309 Mandolin Tuning Machines

About This Item

Engraved die-cast baseplates, 18:1 gear ratio. Complete sets of 4-left/4-right tuners, with equal-length knob shafts and removable pearloid plastic knobs.

Standard 29/32" (23mm) string post spacing. Drill the peghole to 5/16" (7.94mm) and ream the face with our standard peghole reamer.

Each set includes:
• Pair of 4-left, 4-right tuning machines
• Removable pearloid plastic knobs
• Press-fit peghead bushings
• Mounting screws

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly drilled. Our Mandolin Peghead Drill Jig ensures precise 29/32" spacing for accurate alignment for these tuning machines.

Bushings: We recommend the Standard Peghole Reamer to cut smooth, perfectly round holes.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1711 Depth-stop Drill Bit (No.50 bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

New Mandolin Tuning Machines

By

Verified Buyer

I am restoring an 80+ year old A style Kay Mandolin that was my fathers, and needed new tuning machines. The Grover A-Style 309 Mandolin Tuning machines fit my price range. I received them well packaged, and before the scheduled delivery date, thank you StewMac. The posts fit the existing holes perfectly, and the keys are nice and tight, with no slack at all. The post bushings fit well after a slight reaming of the holes. Just the ticket for quality tuning machines at a great price.

Only had two screw holes that didn’t line up. Works great

Upgraded my worn out tuners

I think these are the same tuners that are on my Weber Diamondback, only the Weber is f-style. I have an off brand A Style mandolin that came new with Gotoh tuners. The Gotoh's held their tune but soon wore out (i.e. got loose, buttons fell off). So I wanted to get something that was a little better and would last longer. StewMac had the Grover tuners I was looking for. Installation was easy just drop them in and screw them in down with the enclosed screws. One trick I learned from Frank Ford at Gryphon Strings is to hit them with a little TriFlow before install, makes them so much smoother to tune. Tuners are Highly recommended.

Excellent tuners!

Replaced the basic tuners on my flat top mandolin with these Grovers. Had to fill one hole and drill a new one on each side, but otherwise a straight "drop-in" replacement. Very smooth, precise tuners. Screws supplied with the new 309 tuners could be a tad longer. My only quibble.

A world of difference

By

The tuning machines were received well-packaged & unharmed only a few days after order. They were installed today. They make a huge difference in tuning stability- which was the goal.
They really dressed up the mandolin compared to the stock machines, also.
Work was performed beautifully by Jim Varno Instrument Repair in Leland, NC.
The face side of the headstock needed to be reamed to accept the new ferrules, existing
screw holes were plugged & stained. All expected- no surprises.

Just right!

Bought these to replace the machines on my 1959 Kay mandolin. They fit perfectly and are nice and tight, no slop or free play. Exactly what I wanted. The data sheet doesn't include the length of the button shafts, but these cleared the head stock on this old mando perfectly. The cheaper ones looked too short. Yes, I would recommend these Grovers!

The golden machines looked beautiful in my mandolin as well. I can tune it effortless and very precisely. I liked it very much.

Grovers on My Gretch New Yorker

By

These Tuners are GREAT! Such an improvement over the stock tuners.
What a relief. The center three holes on each side lined up and I only had to drill the end holes. Looks like if I replace the old ones in order to sell the Gretch the new holes will be covered by the old plates.
Thank you Stew Mac

Happy with my purchase

Bought these as replacements for the cheapo tuners on an Irish bouzouki. They work great, hold tune great, look great, all at a reasonable price. Very happy with my purchase. Now I can play the bouzouki with joy instead of consternation.

Beautiful hardware upgrade

I used a set of the gold tuners on a restoration of a 45-year-old Harmony mandolin. The tuners fit perfectly, but the top-side of the pegholes had to be enlarged to fit the newer style bushings. The peg-hole reamer is the perfect tool to ensure a precise fit, which is crucial for smooth operation of in-line tuners.
