Golden Age P-90 Pickups

About This Item

The classic raw single-coil sound!

Find your tone! New sets and hum canceling options
Golden Age P-90 models carry on the raw sound of early rock and electric blues. We listened to your feedback and now offer sets and
hum-canceling options!

Gibson's beloved vintage single-coils were the workingman's pickups, versatile for practically any playing style. Our Golden Age P-90s proudly carry on the tradition, with authentic components that faithfully deliver the classic bright tone.

We offer two styles of Golden Age P-90s to choose from
Our '50s-style Parsons Street™ model is named for the famous Kalamazoo street where the original P-90 was born. It features a black plastic bobbin with old-style enameled unpotted coil wire for the original slightly grittier sound, and is wound to 8.0K ohms.

We also offer a Modern version with a black fiber flatwork bobbin, wound to 8.7K ohms with wax-potted poly-coated wire for a smoother sound. The flatwork look is sometimes preferred for installations with the covers removed.

By player request—all the tone and no hum!
We've just introduced new versions of each model that are reverse wound/reverse polarity (RWRP). Put this pickup in either the neck or bridge position for hum cancellation in the middle position. Modern or vintage style, it's your choice!

New! Sets now available
We now offer sets to give your guitar complete P-90 growl! Available in Parsons Street™ and Modern sets, both are available as RWRP (hum canceling) or Original (not hum-canceling). Choose which tone you like best.

Get the vintage rock sound now!
Golden Age P-90s are direct replacements in Gibson® Les Paul® Juniors, SG® Juniors, and SG® Specials, plus archtop and semi-hollowbody Gibsons® made for P-90s. And they're great choices for giving your next custom guitar that raw vintage tone.

Both Golden Age P-90 models share authentic vintage details:
Alnico 5 magnets
AWG42 coil wire
1.97" (50mm) polepiece spacing
Braided single-conductor hookup wire
Original-spec nickel-plated polepiece screws

Black plastic soapbar cover included. More P-90 covers are available separately.

I put a pair into a cheap epiphone SG. That guitar sounds great. What an upgrade. Very responsive. Definately worth it.

Golden tone from Golden Age

I have an import solid body guitar (her name is Goldy) that I tend to change pickups in, on occasion, just to see what happens. I will admit that I was inspired to make this purchase because of a great sale price, but I have wanted to try a pair for quite a while.
The set I chose was the vintage unpotted RWRP set; I was interested in hearing the difference between those and the set that was in the guitar. At this point I have only installed the neck p'up, and yes, it's more microphonic than the old one (I expected this) and at the same time it is more articulate and complex.
I will have to wait and see if the unpotted nature of these pickups is a problem; I don't play very loud these days and to this point, I am enjoying the bloom that seems to come with it.
Glad that I got RWRP: when the switch is in the middle and both pickups are equal, I have a perfect quiet place from which I can navigate.

I have a set of templets from stewmac and one of them is for gibson smalls or for P-90 pickups. The problem is that the pickups , also from Stewmac, are slightly larger than the template causing me to reroute the cavity or sand down the pickup cover. I chose to reroute the cavity by moving the template a very small amount.

Awesome tone

The modern hum cancelling set must be the best kept secret in town, because I can't figure why these pickups are not the next hype for swapping. And incredible clear and rounded sound without any hiss and the perfect output, not too weak and not too "heavy". Just put them in a Casino, and the clear sound is beautiful and meaty. But adding a fuzz ,men, you feel like Davie Allen on steroids!

Great sounding pickups, great service

I bought a set of the vintage winds for an ES135 that didn't seem to like any pickups I threw at it. These sound fantastic! Great p90 thickness, snarl, without the nasty high end. I had a slight issue with a reading for one of the pickups, and StewMac promptly set out a replacement. Great customer service as well!!

Great sound

I put these pickups in an Ibanez Artcore semihollow that I had gutted. I was amazed that these pickups actually had the clarity I was looking for. It is a pleasure when I strum a chord to hear each individual string and the sustain is excellent. It really comes alive especially on the fat strings of the 11-52's I used.

Wow, this thing rips.

Purchased for an LP Jr. style kit, wired it up with premium pots and such. Much grittier than some modern pickups. Really was looking for that dirt for a loud and nasty guitar, and this hit the spot. Did some aging as well, and the components took the the process nicely.

Great sound for my first P90 build!

By

I've previously built guitars with humbuckers and single coils. So for my latest build, I decided to go for P90 - I'd never played a P90 guitar before, but I'm very happy with the result. I was a bit worried about noise, but the Modern RWRPs (Item # 5471) are surprisingly quiet and sound really great.

I bought some chrome covers separately from CrazyParts, since I didn't feel the black plastic covers would look that good with my whale blue maple top.

'63 SG back to normal

Put two of these in a 1963 SG special that had been fitted with humbuckers. Orange caps and Emerson Pro pots-nice cleans and 8700 OHMS will crank up with my '60s amps.
