Golden Age Humbuckers

About This Item

Vintage vibe, great price. Wake up your guitar! For authentic classic tone, Golden Age humbuckers feature Alnico 5 magnets and AWG42 coil wire just like the originals.

Inspired by legendary pickups of the '50s.
Alnico 5 magnets give that warm classic tone. AWG42 coils are wound on black or zebra bobbins, fabric-taped, mounted on a brass baseplate, and wax-potted for microphonic suppression. The output wire is 4-conductor plus ground, allowing versatile custom coil-tapping, series/parallel, and phase switching options to expand your sound.

Wiring diagrams and vintage dimensions make installation in most humbucker-equipped guitars easy.

Bridge models:9.0K ohms, 2.015" polepiece spread
Neck models:8.0K ohms, 1.97" polepiece spread

Mounting screws, springs and wiring diagrams are included.

Dimensions
Length2.75"(69.85mm)
Width1.5"(38.10mm)
Height.840"(21.34mm)including mounting tabs

Looking for hotter output with more powerful midrange? Check out Golden Age Overwound Humbuckers.

TIP: Handy Humbucker Helpers make installation a whole lot easier.

Color-matching Cream Parts and Bindings
There have always been slight variations in the color of the cream plastic parts used on Gibson and other guitars. It's not uncommon to see brand new and vintage guitars with bindings, pickup rings, toggle switch rings and pickguards that don't perfectly match in color. We do our best to match all our cream products, but there's no absolute control from batch to batch, or from supplier to supplier.

Crisp to Dirty

Installed the set of golden age zebras in my LP Style kit and lived up to expectations. Can achieve a nice bright and clean sound as well as a sustained grunge. Tip....use a good quality soldering station as the wires on these are extremely light gauge. Considered a pair for my 335 Style but I like the differences.

These just sound so good.

I really like these Golden Age humbuckers a lot. They sound so good. I've used them on several builds, repairs and upgrades and I have never been disappointed. Most recently I installed them in my Hamer DouTone. A wonderful guitar but the stock bridge pickup was just way too hot for my taste. A par of Golden Age humbuckers fixed that right up and turned this really good guitar into a really great guitar. My only complaint about Golden Age humbuckers is you can't order them with chrome covers. Why? And Stewmac does not sell chrome covers that fit them. Again why? I had to order chrome covers from another parts vendor and install them myself. I would much rather just be able to order them with covers that match the rest of the hardware on the guitar so that all I have to do is install them and enjoy.

Response from StewMac

Hi Tracy,

Thank you for sharing your honest feedback with us, we genuinely appreciate that. I will gladly pass along your suggestion about the chrome covers to our product development team for their consideration.

Great pick-up's to replace and upgrade with .

I installed a pair of Zebra's in a Epiphone Les Paul and with a little trouble completed the project and it was worth every minute . The problems were using the wrong wiring diagram , that I was told ( by a friend ) would work . Once they were wired using the Stu - Mac diagram my wiring issues were over . I also upgraded the switch and pots and I'm very happy with the results.

It's a pickup!

By

It looks like a pickup, smells like a pickup and, most importantly, sounds like a pickup. Which is exactly what I wanted. Perfect! It plays well with the Dimarzio Injector I have in the neck position and it even sounds pretty good coil split, which I wasn't _really_ expecting. For the money it's pretty dang awesome.

Amazing classic tone humbuckers!

I bought a bridge model to replace the pickup in my Jackson Dinky. I had already replace the stock p/u but wasn't happy with the decision as I play fairly low volume and the extremely high output pickup I used just wasn't giving me the tone I wanted a low volumes. Being a classic 80's type player I tried the Golden Age bridge zebra model to match the Wilkinson Zebra I was putting in the neck and the sound is fantastic. I'm hearing 70's and 80's tones out of this pickup that I haven't heard since my Gibson's back in those days. I have guitars with Seymour Duncans, Dimarzio's, Bill Lawrence hand wound's and Hamer's and none of them sound as much like an older Gibson humbucker than this one. With the setup in this guitar its got a very classic SG sound slightly overdriven, but goes all out with full distortion and effects and breaks up beautifully just like an old Les Paul. Best pickup value for the money I have ever seen. Golden Age pickups are my new favorites. Also, very similar to Rockfield SWC's, which were the best pickups ever made ( my opinion, and I think also Paul Stanley's).

Blacktop strat...its A L I V E!  I T S  A L I V E!!!!

Wasnt sure if they would be an upgrade to the stock pickups in my blacktop strat (HH pup set up) but they made a HUGE difference particularly in the coil splitting. Nice and clear, bell tones. These pups coil split are clearer than my 62 strat with lindy fralin blues specials. Thats when i really knew these were excellent, and for the price!? Amazing! I play at a gospel church so clean high output tones are a MUST but the growl and warmth of humbuckers are also needed for jazzy lines. Prefect pickup for me! Thanks StewMac!

I got zebra and a zebra hot bridge for a Washburn HB-30 semi hollow. I've had the guitar sitting around for 2 years because I didn't like the sound of the stock pups and could never make a decision on what pickups to put in them and I only got the guitar because I'm a sucker for good deals. I kept going between these and various Seymour Duncan's. What sold these to me was the deal around Black Friday. Replaced all electronics with cts pots and switchcraft Jack and switch. The guitar howls now. I've gone through jazz/blues to heavy metal. And these pickups are just killing it. I did a sound comparison with this guitar and my dads Epiphone 335 with same electronics and wired the same, but his has Duncan whole lotta humbucker. These pickups suit the semi so much better.
I'm glad I got these, and I ignored multiple forums that's suggest to save and go with something that costs more. My dad a bit more snobbish with his guitar equipment was left with his head down after hearing how much better this guitar turned out over his.
Thank you Stew Mac for another fantastic product. PS I love your YouTube videos.

awesome replacement P.U.

I had a Jackson 2002 star-spangled V that was given to me as a gift a few months ago and I did not like the pickups in it, so I knew what to do, I ordered a set of golden age pickups without the covers, my third set of pickups that I have installed in my personal guitars.
I chose the 4 conductor set because I wanted a coil cut for the front pick and of course these pickups brought life to an awesome guitar
your pickups are killer, great tone, great quality, and great price and service
keep up the good work and I will be your customer till the gophers start delivering my mail

thank you to everybody at stew mac

Excellent vintage tone!

These pup's are great for the price! They have that classic PAF 42 gauge wind but with a 4 wire connection so they can be wired for a vintage rock Jimmy Page tone... Highly recommended for anyone looking to upgrade and wake up your guitar! Mike, Ipswich River Guitars.
