Haven't started the build yet but the inspection of the components did not reveal any issues. The neck fits perfectly to the body and the frets will require only minor finishing work. Happy with this purchase.

Great kit!

I've built, finished and setup this guitar in a weekend.
The only thing I should have done was to stain it before glueing in the neck.
I also missed some glue left overs around the edge of the veneer, which caused some lighter spots. Since it is a veneer I was afraid to sand through it , so , while I was able to get some glue off, I did not manage to get it out completely. I am sure with some more effort and time, I would have gotten a better result.
I Still am VERY happy with the result..
My goal was a vintage looking guitar with a tobacco sunburst , using stains. I think I got it.
Thanks Stew Mac!

This thing plays great!

I just finished the LP flame top kit with the cherry sunburst finishing kit. I’ll start by saying that I just came upstairs from a half hour of having a ball playing my new finished guitar. The neck/action is awesome and it sounds spectacular (I upgraded to the Parsons pickups on Stewmac’s recommendation, good call). I’ll admit to some moments of despair with the finishing process, when I ran into some issues with somewhat conflicting directions (from instructions, can labels and white papers). So, the finish isn’t like a factory job but it’s probably only me that will notice the couple of “oops” here and there. It really does look impressive. I’ve also questioned (to myself) the quality of the wood used in this kit but after seeing the final results and considering the price/value of this thing, who cares? I’ve played a few real LPs and for me, this guitar is just perfect. Highly recommended.

Quality parts, Instruction errors.

I bought this after building a $99 amazon Telecaster with the hope I would get better quality from a Stewmac kit, which I did for the most part. The neck was great and dead straight after a few twists on the truss rod. I did no fret work and it was quit playable with minimal setup as shipped. I had a few issues with the instructions. The included manual refers to a neck radius of 9.5 inches, an addendum corrected this to 12. It also refers to veneer on the headstock which is not present on the non spalted version. The potentiometers included were two labeled A500k and two labeled B500K but there was no mention of the difference and witch to use where. Stewmac support advised that the A500K were audio taper and to use these for the volume controls. Most of what I found on the web indicated Gibson used the audio tapers for the tone controls, but it was not consistent. Also, the manual lists the tone caps as 0.022uf, the caps supplied are 0.047uf which alters the treble cutoff frequency by a factor of 2.

I was unable to fully align the neck pickup with the strings as the cutout was a little off. The nut slots were cut too high, but this may be intentional to allow for local adjustment.

I used my own wire for most of the electronics since the included fragments were undefined except for the pickup switch .

As a woodworker and retired electrical engineer these were not big issues for me but a novice could have some problems.

I couldn't be happier with the final result. Even with the glue spot issues on the veneer, a little patience and creative thinking, I think it turned out great. Thanks StewMac.

Nice kit guitar!

The guitar came well packaged. I was impressed with the maple top and alignment of the bridge was spot in. Neck was relatively straight and the frets needed to be leveled and crowned. My biggest complaint is the binding around the body. It’s way too thin with barely a 1/16” visible on the face. I would have been happier if the binding was thicker.

Enjoyed building this one

I built the 335 kit last year and learned a lot from it. I jumped on this one to add a Les Paul style to the Arsenal. I tried to fix all of my mistakes from the last build in this one and was very pleased with the result. With some attention to detail these are great kits and produce great guitars.

I like building things. This is the 6th kit I have ordered from stewmac. I am holding off on building this one so my son can look it over and have it set up correctly. I'm sure it will sound good and be a good looking guitar to boot.
