ColorTone Powdered Grain Filler

About This Item

The first step to a flawless finish
ColorTone Powdered Grain Filler is the best choice for filling and leveling the pores of open-grain woods (like rosewood, ash, mahogany, and more) before finishing. Mix with water for the perfect consistency for any wood or job you have.

Custom mix to your exact needs
Our powdered filler works with all stains and finishes including nitro, poly, waterbase, varnish, shellac, and more. The filler won’t shrink or crack, it dries fast and sands easily. You can mix the powder as thick or as thin as you need. Using a contrasting filler color can often enhance the grain as well.

Everything you need for a factory look
  • Fills wood pores without sinking, shrinking, or cracking
  • Compatible with all finishes
  • Compatible with all stains, waterbase pigments, sealers, and topcoats
  • Colors developed especially for instruments
  • Neutral is perfect for custom tinting with ColorTone Stains and Pigments
  • Easy to apply, dries fast, and sands easily
  • Non-toxic, solvent-free, and nonflammable

ColorTone Powdered Grain Filler is supplied as a fine powder, ready to mix with water (a 1:2 ratio of water to filler works for us). Apply to the wood, scrape or squeegee off excess, let it dry, sand the surface level, and clean with a damp cloth. It's that easy! Now you're ready to spray a smooth blemish-free professional finish.

No shelf-life to worry about—when stored dry, the filler will last indefinitely.

6-ounce (170ml) resealable pouch.

Does the job

By

I don't have any other products to compare this to, but it did the job it was supposed to do. I followed the instructions and a few Youtube videos for reference before grain sealing a swamp ash body. The filler mixes easily with water and spreads easily. I found it was easiest to scrape away the excess with an old credit card, as a squeegee was too soft.

The mahogany color is a nice even brown.

Replacement of mistaken grain filler order

By

Verified Buyer

I ordered a medium brown mahogany grain filler, but received a reddish brown variant. After alerting StewMac to this mistake through customer service on line, they took care of a replacement immediately. No hassles; I did not have to send back the incorrect grain filler type. This is the customary excellence of Stewmac.

A good color for filling black walnut. It takes two or three applications to completely fill the pores, but the residue sands off quickly.

The product works very well in filling grain, but it was a little messy to work with for me. The results were very good.

So Far So Good

Easy to mix, easy to put on, easy cleanup. Gotta be quick if using a brush, don't be shy, you're not painting a portrait...get it on there! One bag did an entire double neck guitar, with a lot left over, so be liberal when applying.

Keeps it simple

Grain filling Mahogany is crucial. Not stuff for hardwood floors or furniture. StewMac keeps it simple and quick delivery all the way up to. There grain fill is simple, easy to use and looks great .)

ColorTone Powedered Grain Filler

My first experience with water-based powdered filler. On mahogany, which seems to have many large deepish "pores", it took 5 applications and still left many small "pores". As a water-based filler I guess some shrinkage in drying should be expected. So if you really want a very high gloss finish with absolutely no "pores" maybe consider a non-shrink alternative.

Not thrilled with the smell

By

It works well as a grain filler, fills and sands easily, but why does it need to smell like the makeup counter at Walmart?
