Premium solid tonewoods throughout
We did not cut any corners in sourcing the woods for these amazing kits. We hand selected these woods for great figuring and grain patterns. The mahogany is straight and even grained, the koa has great variation in color and beautiful flame.

Modified Tenor Uke

By

This is the tenor uke kit modified with an 8 string neck that I carved. I had to plug and redrill the bridge for the additional strings. Fortunately the extra position dot material fit the existing holes for a nice plug. I also had to re-cut the nut slots. This is my first foray into luthiery. The uke has a nice full sound when strummed. The kit worked out good with a few exceptions: the top was cut about 1/16" shy of the sides at the waist area so I had to adjust the top to split the difference which put the seam slightly off center. I could have used a little more information on aligning the neck and positioning the bridge. However, it all worked out fine. I strung it up with Aquilla strings, 2 pairs tuned in unison and 2 pairs in octaves. The videos are very encouraging with Dan's relaxed demeanor. I enjoyed the project and the videos.

What a fun project

I bought the Koa Uke kit, which arrived in great shape, and had a blast building it. The wood is a high quality, with a great look. I can't wait to hear it! The build went very well, the kit is very forgiving, but I am waiting now for warmer weather in Wisconsin to finish it outside.

A previous reviewer mentioned the neck heel was shorter than the depth of the body--true in my case, too, but I was able to accommodate that by gluing a guitar pick on as an end cap, shaping it to the heel. I looks great (tortoise shell, heavy duty pick, 96 mm thick), and transitions smoothly to the back of the instrument. I'm trying to screw up my courage to attempt a guitar kit next, maybe the body-built would be the way to go?

Mahogany Kit

A decent introduction to building. I'm glad I did this. The material quality was more than satisfactory overall, as the final product's timbre was very pleasing. The only minor thing about the parts was that the neck I got had a heel that was shorter than the instrument's depth. There is a bit of an awkward corner on the heel now.

The instructions, however, weren't very clear when it came to mounting the braces, so I had to do some research to figure that out. I think that sometimes the order of operations presented in the instructions were also a little confusing at times.

Lastly, I was sent an extra "errata" sheet on the rosette purfling that was supposed to account for the fingerboard being shorter. This did not end up being useful because the fingerboard actually did end up being long enough to cover the top of the purfling. Unfortunately, because I assumed this errata sheet was correct, I thought it wouldn't matter where I placed the joint, so it was not hidden by the fingerboard in the end.

Koa kit received...looks great!

I received the koa ukulele kit today. This is very nice looking wood! My order also includes binding and kerfing...looking to customize this with binding and inlay. Some very interesting patterns in the wood...and I can see that this is going to look fantastic once it's assembled and finished (I'll be using your Wipe-On Poly finish.). Knowing that this is a close-out item...and reading the previous comment...I felt I had to buy this now, even though I'm in the middle of another project. Thanks!

Outstanding KOA kit

I was wowed by the fret board, head stock, and quality of the wood and how nicely they were cut out. I am about to start building, and rarely leave feedback until I know how things go, but in this case, I bought the kit and am reviewing what I found in the box. I am very impressed with this Uke and can tell you that it is up to the standard we have all come to know and love. Grab one before they are gone.

I bought the koa Ukulele kit and while it is fairly easy to assemble, I managed to make some mistakes with a router. Pat at tech support was a nice help in guiding me how to fix it...
I bought another kit so I can make one with out the mistakes and would recommend this company to anyone interested in working on guitars or building a kit.

Just about to finish the uke. Great kit too build. Just a tip when glueing sides. It's a good idea too glue the head and tail blocks to sides individually as they are radiused. The fretboard also covers the rosette at the join which works quite well. Love it. Nico.

Tenor Uke Kit

I found the kit instructions did not contain the details I was expecting for the bracing. There was a requirement to shape the bracing but there was no dimensions supplied with the instructions so you had to work from pictures and assume the shape required. The videos were a help. I also found that additional supports in the jig helped obtain the shape. Overall the kit is a good start for making an instrument, I have not completed it but have learned a lot.
