3-Corner Fret Dressing Files

About This Item

Specially made for traditional fret crowning and shaping.

Smooth corners protect the fretboard.
These special files are for those who prefer a traditional method of fret crowning. Their smooth corners won't leave scratches in the fretboard, and they're great for shaping the ends of the frets.

The small fine-cut file has 3" x 1/8" tapered cutting surfaces, and the medium-cut file has 5" x 1/4" tapered surfaces. The large file is known as a cant saw file, and is a favorite of our fret expert Dan Erlewine and many other well-known luthiers. It has a versatile flattened-triangle shape, with a 4-5/8" x 1/2" and two 4-5/8" x 5/16" cutting surfaces. All files have comfortable rubber-coated handles.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Sharp, Precise, and Well Designed

I have been using mechanics files for fret dressing for years. What a difference when I finally purchased the right tool for the job! My fretwork rose to a whole different level with virtually no risk of unintentional fingerboard damage. Thank you StewMac!

Great Crowning File

This file is just the right size. It has fine grained teeth and works great for crowning those flattened files after leveling.

First time using this tool...

... and I liked it!
Cut clean without being too aggressive, but wasted no time getting the job done. Good length and balance. Took a lot of the angst out of doing my first fret dress.

Check the edges before use.

The edges on the 8" one I purchased were not completely smooth and could cut into a fret board if not used carefully. Fortunately, I also purchased fret board protectors at the same time so it was not a critical issue. Moving forward, the file edges will require a bit of work with a whetstone to properly smooth them.

Medium Three Corner File

I bought this file after watching a StewMac fret dressing video. The file performs nicely, as stated. I did have to smooth the corners using a Drexel to keep the teeth from cutting into the fret board. Test it on a test piece before using.

I bought the medium one.

They say on the video provided that if you buy one, buy the one in the middle, so I did.
It is exactly as they say, with the edges clean with no serrations, but boy, those edges are thin and tiny, and if you slant it a bit one way or the other, the serrations can get to the wood.
I use this with stainless fret covers only, and only for light touch ups, not for main crowning or leveling.
They really shine around edges on the fretboard edge, and the rounding of the fret at its ends.

I couldn’t buy all the fretting files, so I bought the recommended all-around file. This works great for most fret work. Very well made.
