Luthier's Digital Caliper

About This Item

Our Luthier's Digital Caliper combines precision, ease of use, versatility and an attractive price, but its usefulness for fret work makes it special.

Customized for fretwork!
We added a custom jaw notch for accurately measuring fretwire crown height (the height above the fretboard). This is essential for comparing new wire to original wire. And thanks to a great idea by repairman Frank Ford, we've also added a notch on the depth gauge to measure fret height on the instrument—a real time saver.

  • Measures fret height before AND after fret installation
  • Accurate readouts in inches, millimeters, or fractions
  • A must for all precision guitar work

Handy for lots of other measuring jobs in the shop—nuts, saddles, tuners, tool setups and more—this caliper has long-life stainless steel jaws. Featuring LCD digital readouts in inches, millimeters or fractions, it measures outside, inside and depth dimensions up to 6" (154mm), with super-accurate .0005" (.01mm) resolution. The jaws can be locked at any position.

CR2032 battery and durable plastic storage case included.

Very Disappointing

By

Verified Buyer

I think I've had this caliper for a year or so, and it worked great when it worked. It featured a convenient automatic conversion between millimeters and inches, and between fractions and decimals. That was very helpful. It seemed pretty accurate as well. Unfortunately, it seems to have just stopped working. I noticed the display starting to fade out, and I just changed the battery. When I changed out the battery with the extra one supplied, it still didn't work. I had a brand new package of Duracell button batteries, so I tried one of those. Still doesn't work. Very disappointing. I'll add that the battery drawer is not well made. It doesn't "click" into place, and there's this loose "O" ring that seems more trouble than it's worth. The "O" ring seems to prevent the battery drawer from closing, but then removing it doesn't make the fit any better.

Fantastic set of calipers. Just what I'd been looking for. They have many uses, not just for measuring guitar stuff. Extremely easy to use and easy to read.

I hesitated for a long time on pulling the trigger on this purchase (it's not cheap) but I got some bonus bucks from StewMac and gave it a shot. I'm not disappointed - it's thoughtfully designed and is sturdy, accurate and useful for so many tasks, guitar-related and not. I'm always nervous about damaging precision tools so the sturdy protective storage case is a welcome plus!

Altho this is not guitar related, I bought these to replace the cheap pair I had for my ammo reloading. These are "dead nuts" as I needed a real good pair of digital calipers....getting down to the guitar stuff, I have purchased quite a bit of hardware/tools from StewMac and say that they are excellent items. I have bought a few bone nuts for my guitars and they are perfect.
Again, these digital calipers are an excellent product and glad that I bought it !
In the future, I will be doing some fret work and I know that these will be perfect for a setup ! ! !

My first REAL presicion tool

By

I had been looking around for a quality caliper that had features I wanted. I looked at Harbor Freight and checked out the one from Pittsburgh, but I was not sold on it. I'm sure it's a fine tool, but the display was small (the older I have gotten my eyes are not that great anymore). I looked at a few home centers in my state, and still felt like what they stocked wasn't going to last.

After months of thinking, and realizing that if I was going to build guitars, well I needed a caliper that would last for years. Now I've never used one of these in my life, but watching a demo of this product I knew this is what I needed. When I received it I was VERY impressed by the heft of the device, how smooth the jaw moves and the accuracy. I still need more practice with it, but now that I invested in this, I am really happy I chose StewMac for it.

If anyone can pass this suggestion on to R&D it would be appreciative. What I'd like to see for this caliper is a backlit LCD display. Black background with white text (or a mid to dark blue background with white text. I know that in the music world these are used on higher end FX processors) Boy will make it easier to read in rooms that don't have great lighting. Additionally the the size of the characters is perfect so please don't change that :-)
