String Action Gauge

About This Item

Fast, accurate measurements for setups.
Our String Action Gauge is a "Swiss Army Ruler" for setup adjustments on any stringed instrument.

This pocket-size stainless steel rule has become a luthier's favorite in busy shops. It's the best way yet to get vital measurements on acoustic and electric instruments.
• String height
• Bridge saddle height
• Saddle slot depth
• Fret slot depth (unbound fingerboards)
• Nut height
• Pickup polepiece height

No more "three-and-a-half-64ths or 3/32" plus one of those little lines." This gauge measures in ways that regular rulers can't.
—Dan Erlewine

Developed here at Stewart-MacDonald by Dan Erlewine and Don MacRostie, the gauge features a progressive string height scale: simply slide it across the frets and read the measurement under the string. It's faster to use than any ruler, and stays parallel to the fingerboard—much easier than trying to hold a ruler perpendicular to a rounded fret.

StewMac's String Action Gauge has two models (sold separately) for measuring in inches or millimeters. The string height markers are graduated from .010" to .140" on the inch model, and from 0.25mm to 3.50mm on the metric version.

The back of the gauge has a time-saving fractional/decimal/metric conversion chart.

The String Action Gauge is made of durable stainless steel with precision-etched markings, and fits right in your pocket.

Tip: You can use the gauge to set router depth, instead of a shop ruler. It sits solidly on your router base, with the scale right where you need it.

Great heavy duty duty and accurate. Sure there’s other means to measure, but this is so convenient and helps to ensure an accurate setup!

Not for classical guitar

By

Measures string height from .25mm to 3.50mm. Unfortunately it's fairly standard for a classical guitar to have the 6th at 4mm or above.

Response from StewMac

Hello Brian,
We appreciate your feedback regarding our String Action Gauge. While the string hieght section of this tool has a maximum of 3.50mm, the 75mm steel rule (on the opposite side) will work for measurements above 3.50mm. We recommend rotating the gauge 90 degrees and using the steel rule section that has incriments of 5mm. This spans from 1mm-75mm. It is also extended toward the middle of the gauge for checking slot depth and other tight measurements that may need extended. I hope this informaiton helps. Please know that if you are not satisfied with this product you may return it for a refund or exchange. Once gain, we apologize for this confusion and thank you for your feedback.

Highly useful

Since acquiring this a few weeks ago, I have reached for it over and over, largely passing over my 6-inch machinist's rule. Each of the scales serves its purpose, but my most-used is the set of graduations by .010", because I don't think my eyes could ever resolve on 1/64" ticks. I think I like second-best, the ability to read in 64ths from left or right. They're limited to an inch, but that's exactly where I'm working. (Suggestion: continue these scales to a central meeting-point; we often want to measure to either side of a mid-point.) The "how to use" sheet enclosed also mentions, among other things, that there is a .005" distance from the bottom of those lines (which appear to be the same width as all others), and the top. That shows the kind of thought put into this handy little rule.

Quality Gauge, works great

I purchased this gauge to setup my PRS guitar to the manufacturer's spec. It worked beautifully. The hash marks are clear, appear accurate, and the gauge itself is very heavy gauge steel and well made. It's made for a lifetime of use.
