Luthier's Digital Caliper

About This Item

Our Luthier's Digital Caliper combines precision, ease of use, versatility and an attractive price, but its usefulness for fret work makes it special.

Customized for fretwork!
We added a custom jaw notch for accurately measuring fretwire crown height (the height above the fretboard). This is essential for comparing new wire to original wire. And thanks to a great idea by repairman Frank Ford, we've also added a notch on the depth gauge to measure fret height on the instrument—a real time saver.

  • Measures fret height before AND after fret installation
  • Accurate readouts in inches, millimeters, or fractions
  • A must for all precision guitar work

Handy for lots of other measuring jobs in the shop—nuts, saddles, tuners, tool setups and more—this caliper has long-life stainless steel jaws. Featuring LCD digital readouts in inches, millimeters or fractions, it measures outside, inside and depth dimensions up to 6" (154mm), with super-accurate .0005" (.01mm) resolution. The jaws can be locked at any position.

CR2032 battery and durable plastic storage case included.

excellent quality tool

I hesitated for a long time on pulling the trigger on this purchase (it's not cheap) but I got some bonus bucks from StewMac and gave it a shot. I'm not disappointed - it's thoughtfully designed and is sturdy, accurate and useful for so many tasks, guitar-related and not. I'm always nervous about damaging precision tools so the sturdy protective storage case is a welcome plus!

Altho this is not guitar related, I bought these to replace the cheap pair I had for my ammo reloading. These are "dead nuts" as I needed a real good pair of digital calipers....getting down to the guitar stuff, I have purchased quite a bit of hardware/tools from StewMac and say that they are excellent items. I have bought a few bone nuts for my guitars and they are perfect.
Again, these digital calipers are an excellent product and glad that I bought it !
In the future, I will be doing some fret work and I know that these will be perfect for a setup ! ! !

My first REAL presicion tool

I had been looking around for a quality caliper that had features I wanted. I looked at Harbor Freight and checked out the one from Pittsburgh, but I was not sold on it. I'm sure it's a fine tool, but the display was small (the older I have gotten my eyes are not that great anymore). I looked at a few home centers in my state, and still felt like what they stocked wasn't going to last.

After months of thinking, and realizing that if I was going to build guitars, well I needed a caliper that would last for years. Now I've never used one of these in my life, but watching a demo of this product I knew this is what I needed. When I received it I was VERY impressed by the heft of the device, how smooth the jaw moves and the accuracy. I still need more practice with it, but now that I invested in this, I am really happy I chose StewMac for it.

If anyone can pass this suggestion on to R&D it would be appreciative. What I'd like to see for this caliper is a backlit LCD display. Black background with white text (or a mid to dark blue background with white text. I know that in the music world these are used on higher end FX processors) Boy will make it easier to read in rooms that don't have great lighting. Additionally the the size of the characters is perfect so please don't change that :-)

A very good tool

I have other Precision digital calibers.l tested this against my other calibers to verify that's it is accurate.

The one thing I don't like about these is that the adjustment roller is not very tight. That makes these feel a little bit cheap, in my opinion.

I like everything else about them. I can easily measure fret height on and off at the guitar. These convert from inches decimal to inches fraction for me, which I really like. Of course, it also gives metric measurements, when desired.

They seem sturdy, and of high quality, other than the roller that I already mentioned, and I expect to use these for years to come.

Update 03-10-2019

I contacted customer service about the adjustment roller to see if my unit was broken or if the adjustment roller was meant to be a bit slack. It turns out that they were designed this way to prevent over tightening and breaking delicate pieces. It's been a couple of months since I got these and I don't even notice the adjustment roller being slack, any longer.

I'm still quite satisfied with this and give it top marks.

Another High Quality Tool From StewMac

My new caliper arrived and I'm excited about it. This is a well-made, high-quality caliper. It feels substantial in my hands, not cheap and fragile. I have yet to use all the features, but I can tell, it will be with me for a long time.

I can even see the numbers!

I'm now old enough that the vernier scale on my old machinist's caliper is just too hard to work with any more. The big, clear display on this new Stewmac luthier's caliper is great!

And there's a bonus! Instant conversion among millimeters, inches, and fractional inches. That last feature blew me away. So handy.

And the notches to make it easier to measure frets is a really useful detail.

I love this caliper!

3 accurate measurements all at once! Fraction/decimal/metric. Great for repair work and also for selling guitars online. Easy to get neck/body thickness measurements for prospective online buyers.

Look No Further. Eureka!

After trying to save a few bucks shopping around for digital calipers, I came to the conclusion I wasn't going to save much by getting something without the special luthier features in this. When you add in the special features, the price is very reasonable. I regret wasting time trying to save a buck elsewhere.

I have a degree in manufacturing, and am a nitpick when it comes to quality, reliability, fit, finish, etc. Let's just say I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

I love that I can switch between decimal inches, fractional inches, and millimeters. Measurements are completely repeatable. There's no backlash. If you open the caliper before turning it on, the measurement is still dead on. You can also set the zero point for relative measurements or to reset the closed zero point.

One more thing. My dial caliper has gotten quite lonely since this baby showed up.
