Golden Age Overwound Humbuckers

About This Item

The overwound versions of our classic Golden Age Humbuckers! The same Alnico 5 magnets, but overwound to 12K ohms for high output, powerful midrange and driving tone.

The AWG43 coils are wound on fabric-taped bobbins, mounted on a brass baseplate, and wax-potted for microphonic suppression.

The output wire is 4-conductor plus ground, enabling versatile custom coil-tapping, series/parallel, and phase switching options. 12K ohms. Bridge model polepieces have 2.015" spread; neck models have 1.97" spread. Mounting screws, springs and wiring diagrams included.

Inspired by great guitar pickups of the 50s!
  • Alnico 5 magnets (aluminum/nickel/cobalt) as used in the originals, for classic tone.
  • Vintage dimensions for easy installation in standard pickguards and bodies.
  • Wax-potted for microphonic suppression.
  • Wiring diagrams included with each pickup.

Length: 2.75" (69.85mm)
Width: 1.5" (38.10mm)
Height including mounting tabs, bridge pickup: .840" (21.34mm)

Color-matching Cream Parts and Bindings
There have always been slight variations in the color of the cream plastic parts used on Gibson and other guitars. It's not uncommon to see brand new and vintage guitars with bindings, pickup rings, toggle switch rings and pickguards that don't perfectly match in color. We do our best to match all our cream products, but there's no absolute control from batch to batch, or from supplier to supplier.

OK pick-ups

I installed the regular GGs (8K & 9K) in one of my builds and they sounded fantastic, so I decided to replace the ancient DiMarzios in my old Gibson Les Paul with them, but mistakenly purchased the over-wounds instead. The bridge pup was OK, but the neck one sounded like a mess, plus both of them exhibited such otherworldly attack that I had to bury them below their rings to counteract the effect. I had never heard a pick-up doing that before. I'm all for attack, but in the case of these pups, it is too percussive to the point of wrong. The other thing is the matte finish which looks weird (my other set has metal covers.) I really wanted to love these as much I did the originals, but I guess 12K and 43# wire is not for me or my set-up. Also, I don't understand why it's called a set if both pups are identical, physically and spec-wise.

Good product. A bit on the hyper side compared to a pair of 59's.

I bought this to replace a George Lynch Screamin Demon pickup that just never agreed with me. This is what my Jackson needed. Sounds great.

i bought these on special to put into an epiphone Les Paul but they ended up in a Les Paul studio. who do i send my medical bills to as they are absolute ball tearing pickups & i am now in need of an operation. love them swapped the bridge pickup over to an original humbucker but swapped it back to the Golden age pickup after 30 mins as they give a better balanced sound.

Got the tone I have been looking for ,Going to add a coil tap switch and treble bleed circuit as soon as the parts arrive. After test driving all the electric guitars I have been wanting all my life I finally got to the point where I could afford any of them but the manufacturers have lost sight and identity and I just got tired of trying to find my dream guitar. Bought an Epiphone SG and put these pickups in and couldn't be happier . Still have lots of money left for other things.

So, I just had these installed on a new Ibanez AS73 (335 style). I've always been a bit weird about "semi-hollow body guitars" though the last few years I've been finding ones I like. Copped this one in November 2017 though unfortunately they had the crappy ACH1 pickups that go in "middle of the line" priced Ibanez guitars. I've gotten in the habit of just replacing them with upgraded pickups and moving on.

My issue is this: on a full hollow jazz style guitar, I do like low pull Alnico 2 and 3 magnets that let a hollowbody retain some sweetness. The same pickups in a solid or semi may sound good though sometimes it seems to lack a certain character I prefer. I've taken to using Filtertron style pickups in these types of guitars though thought I'd try these overwounds after seeing a buddy of mine play a 345 with "Dirty Fingers" in it. He was making that guitar scream so I decided to give these a try to get into that world.

While real "dirty fingers" get so dirty because of ceramic magnets, I'm glad that I went with these Golden Age Overwounds. They retain the clarity with the Alnico 5 magnets though have a lot more strength and pull than a Alnico 2 job. They're also versatile. Last night I went to a jam and played everything from funky Prince tunes, gospel inspired tunes, and jazz. I mainly stayed in the neck position though the bridge is great too. I also had my friend and tech do a coil split to get more single coil sounds. These things are versatile, and just sound BIG. I got all the character, clarity, and power in one pickup.

Get these pickups: you won't be disappointed.
