Golden Age Humbuckers

About This Item

Vintage vibe, great price. Wake up your guitar! For authentic classic tone, Golden Age humbuckers feature Alnico 5 magnets and AWG42 coil wire just like the originals.

Inspired by legendary pickups of the '50s.
Alnico 5 magnets give that warm classic tone. AWG42 coils are wound on black or zebra bobbins, fabric-taped, mounted on a brass baseplate, and wax-potted for microphonic suppression. The output wire is 4-conductor plus ground, allowing versatile custom coil-tapping, series/parallel, and phase switching options to expand your sound.

Wiring diagrams and vintage dimensions make installation in most humbucker-equipped guitars easy.

Bridge models:9.0K ohms, 2.015" polepiece spread
Neck models:8.0K ohms, 1.97" polepiece spread

Mounting screws, springs and wiring diagrams are included.

Dimensions
Length2.75"(69.85mm)
Width1.5"(38.10mm)
Height.840"(21.34mm)including mounting tabs

Looking for hotter output with more powerful midrange? Check out Golden Age Overwound Humbuckers.

TIP: Handy Humbucker Helpers make installation a whole lot easier.

Color-matching Cream Parts and Bindings
There have always been slight variations in the color of the cream plastic parts used on Gibson and other guitars. It's not uncommon to see brand new and vintage guitars with bindings, pickup rings, toggle switch rings and pickguards that don't perfectly match in color. We do our best to match all our cream products, but there's no absolute control from batch to batch, or from supplier to supplier.

Great Sound!

By

I have now bought 7 sets of these for various new builds. The 4 wire sets are great for coil split operation. One of my customers asked me to install a set in his LP, because they sounded so much better!
The one bad comment I have is on the one set I bought with chrome covers. The covers seem to stain and gum up really badly, and are impossible to clean after that. Believe me, I've tried everything.

Upgraded th PU on my Epiphone ES339

My ES339 sounded muddy. I Tried the Golden Age Humbuckers because I wouldn't be out too much money if I did not like them. As It turns out I love them. They are clear without being shrill. I can hear the woody/hollowbody tone in my clean sound. With overdrive and distortion they rock and roll. My bridge pickup is much more usable and versatile. Of course, I wonder if more expensive pickups would sound better. I'm just not willing to spend a bunch of the money chasing tone. The GAH gives me the tones I need. If I need a better tone, the pickups are not holding me back, my playing is.
The ES339 pickups have a harness attached to the volume pot. I un-clipped the stock pickup and harness and then directly sodered the GAH wires to the old volume pot.

This purchase is the second set of GA Humbuckers to go into my guitars. I installed this pair into an Ibanez RGA42FM replacing the stock pickups. I'm telling you, I love these things. The first pair went into an Ibanez Artcore AS93 Semi-hollow, I was so impressed, I came back for more.

Like a new guitar!

Purchased along with a Golden Age pre-wired harness for an Ibanez AS73B that had the usual crappy stock pickups. What a difference! Great clarity and tone at all volume levels at an unbelievable price (they were on sale but they are a great value at full price). Dave at TriTone who installed them said they are one of the least known and underrated pups on the market and was very pleased with the outcome of the reclamation project (included Gotoh tuners and a tusk nut). I am considering putting Golden Age pups in a MIM telecaster now!

I replaced epiphone 100 standard bridge pickup and it sounds great the only thing to note is the matte finish on the plastic bobbins, My Seymour Duncan is shiny zebra. For the money, you cannot beat it.

Interesting pickups

I bought a set of these to replace the stock "Santana S" pickups that came on my 2018 PRS SE Standard Santana. Great improvement in output and tone. I bought the pair, Neck and Bridge, and installation was easy. I then did an A/B comparrison with my PRS SE Custom 24 Zebra which has the "Big Brother" PRS 85/15 pickups. Overall, the Golden Age pickups had slightly less output. The tone profile had less midrange giving me the impression of being brighter with more bottom than the 85/15s. It didn't hit the compressor quite as hard, and the overall output volume was just a bit less than the 85/15. It has more of a modern, HiFi sound. It's articulate, clean, with a pretty tight low end. I definitely had to turn down the first stage volume level on the amp from 12 o'clock to 10 o'clock to keep if from overdriving the front end. They fit the standard humbucker bezels perfectly. I like this pickup!

I built a resoglass map guitar and installed these humbuckers on it. Wow, they are rock solid. I own a host of other humbucker instruments with 57 classics and a pair of antiquities. These Golden Age pickups are great pickups no matter what the price. I'm truly pleased with them.

Great pups!!

By

Put a set of zebras in my 2004 Ibanez Destroyer and they were all I hoped they would be! The stock pups sounded like grainy mud, just awful. I had already upgraded the pots, cap (orange drop), and input jack (Switchcraft), but the sound was still terrible. At this point I knew it needed new pickups as the guitar itself resonated great unplugged. After about three months of research and agonizing over which to get, I opted for these as I generally prefer lower output pickups. Totally transformed my Destroyyer! Love them! Great clean and crunchy and great "feel" to boot! Played with them live in church the Sunday after recieving them and they really cut through without being obnoxious. Will definitely buy more Golden Age pickups!
