Deadblow Fretting Hammer

About This Item

More efficient no-bounce fret installation. We fitted this durable hammer with a machined brass convex face especially for fretwork.

The shock-absorbing shot-filled head won't bounce like a regular hammer, so it transfers more energy directly to the fret. This helps seat the wire more firmly, with fewer hammer blows and less chance of the fret springing back.

Overall length: 9-1/2" (241.3mm)
Striking surface diameter: 13/16" (20.64mm)
Weight: 1/2 lb. (.2268 kg)

Durable steel-reinforced handle.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Great hammer but....

By

Works great and does exactly what it is supposed to do. Unfortunately the production quality leaves much to be desired. The hammer was unusually greasy and there were lots of large soft flakes from where the hammer must have been cut from the plastic mold, still attached. They were easy to cut off with an exacto knife and sand flush but I don't come to stewmac to have to modify tools once I receive them. More something I would have expected from a cheap amazon tool. Again, though, it is a great hammer overall and works exactly as expected. Just didn't look the part. The brass face doesn't appear to be detachable so hopefully this doesn't wear out too bad over time.

Don’t bother with those small, two sided fret hammers...

This one is GREAT. You can do a nice, solid deadblow from about 8”. It has nice impact and absolutely no bounce! A great tool .

do what it have to do

I can't say i'm impressed by the look of this hammed, honestly, I find it ugly. I prefer classic wooden tool, I should have buy the other one instead. It's just a matter of taste...
BUT it's tool, and it don't have to be pretty so, it do the job it have to do!

Finally broke down and got one

I finally broke down and picked up one of these since my trusty old fretting hammer is starting to see its age. I was impressed with the balance and a little wary lightness of it. But it swings smooth and hits solid. Wish the heads were replaceable. Unless mine is tightened super tight - it doesn’t seem to want to come off.

Much prefer this to the wooden handled hammer.

The balance and weight give me a sense of control, unlike the other Stewmac hammer that certainly worked well, but was distractingly light in the hand.

LOVE my deadblow!

The brass head on the first one I purchased fell off. I asked SM for information regarding the type and amount of shot they used in these. Their response was to send me a brand-new one!

For those not familiar, the deadblow allows forgiveness when trying to establish a consistent throw. It also allows the momentum to go into setting the fret instead of some of the "bounce" you may experience with traditional hammers.
