Curly Maple Back and Side Set for Dreadnought Guitar

About This Item

Matched for color and grain!
Back and side sets are bookmatched halves, for joining and profiling.

This AA grade Maple (Acer macrophyllum) is closely quartersawn and slightly easier to bend, with more uniform color and straighter grain.

Curly Maple Back and Sides are a bookmatched set of two. When joined they are large enough for a Dreadnought size guitar. Sides are unprofiled (rectangular) and unbent.

    Back dimensions
  • Each half is approximately 8-1/4" x 22" (210mm x 559mm)
  • Thickness-sanded to 0.115" (2.9mm)
    Side dimensions
  • Each half is approximately 5" x 31-1/2" (127mm x 800mm)
  • Thickness-sanded to 0.090" (2.3mm)

Act fast! We only have a very limited supply of these sets.

Disapointed

First time wood buyer. The picture seem to have more flame than the wood I received. Normally, I like to actually see and feel before buying. Probably will not buy wood again.

The set I got was fantastic for the price. Flat, , no warping, thickness sanded, and great consistent figure.

The wood looks very nice with an even color and decent wave.

Straight grain, nicely quartersawn, super value

This looks really nice, and the figure is amazing for the price.. I got the medium figure, and with just a breath of dye, it’ll pop under nitro. Thinking about a mahogany top, kind of balance out the maple highs....
Keep your eyes on Happy Dog Guitars to see what I come up with.

Not So Much Flame

By

The flame only goes about six inches from the centre join at the most. Some flame less.

Not as much flame as hoped for.

I bought the medium flame set for a viola da gamba commission, but the flame was not adequate for the project. I purchased the High Flame set and it was acceptable, and I will use it, but not what I am used to as a professional violin maker. Otherwise good wood. As a professional violin maker, I'm used to much more figure in violin tone wood. So, if you need a good amount of flame, go with the higher priced set.

nice set for AA grade

I don't buy a whole lot of tonewood that I can't see but stewmacs got a good reputation for customer service so I took a chance. I bought the lower grade back and sides and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of figure. The sides were sanded down to a little less than .090 and bent just fine without removing anymore material.

Curly maple back.

The back pieces cupped almost immediately after arrival, and my shop is carefully climate controlled. Skip this - don't waste your money.
