ColorTone Waterbase Grain Filler

About This Item

Our first choice for filling the pores of open-grain woods. Compatible with all stains and finishes.

The first step to a flawless professional finish!
ColorTone Waterbase Grain Filler is our first choice for filling and leveling the pores of open-grain woods, such as rosewood, ash, koa and mahogany, before spraying a finish. No shrinking or cracking; it dries faster than other types of fillers, and sands easily. Supplied in 4-ounce jars, ready to mix with water.

"It's grain filler, wood putty, crack filler, hole-filler and mistake-patcher, all rolled into one product. The colors are natural and realistic."
—Dan Erlewine
  • Waterbase, non-toxic, solvent-free and nonflammable
  • Compatible with all finishes, including nitrocellulose and waterbase lacquers
  • Compatible with most stains, waterbase pigments, sealers and topcoats
  • Traditional guitar colors
  • Neutral is a light base filler for custom tinting
  • Easy to apply, dries fast and sands easily
  • Fills wood pores without sinking, shrinking or cracking
ColorTone Grain Filler is supplied in paste form, ready to mix with water (10-15 percent water works well for us) and brush on the wood. Let it dry, sand the surface level, and clean with a damp cloth. It's that easy, and you're ready to spray a smooth, blemish-free professional finish. No shelf-life problems: if the filler dries hard in your cup, simply add more water.

4-ounce (118ml) container.

Why use grain filler? Unfinished rosewood, mahogany, koa and ash have porous "open-grained" surfaces. Filling and leveling the pores leaves the surface smooth for applying uniform finish coats. Using a contrasting filler color can often enhance the grain as well.

This is a fairly delicate filler, if you use anything coarser than 320 on it expect to do it over again. It seems to shrink quite a bit too.

Currently using this with a slight amber tint on roasted swamp ash. Following the fundamentals in Dan Erlewine's finishing book. Mixes and tints easily.

Mixes well, sands well, but watch out for darkening under certain circumstances

This is good stuff. I mixed it with the almost-white alder color to fill some router boo-boos in white maple. When I applied it, it matched perfectly. But after using that two-part super thick ("equal to 70 spray coats") varnish (Home Depot), it showed up much darker than the maple. Haven't tried it with spray coatings.

The two-part stuff darkens everything. It brought out the colors of the maple, which had darker streaks, very nicely--I just needed to know that it was going to do that.

Ok but not more than OK

I bought this because my usual grain filler has been out of stock. This is the first water-based grain filler I’ve used.

In terms of performance, in the end things came out alright with this product. But I had to experiment with diluting the filler, and I wasn’t super confident I got the right consistency.

All in all, this seems fine. But I’ll be going back to oil-based fillers next time.

Matches Rosewood very well... I mixed some up with a few drops of hide glue and it dries rock hard. The cure after sanding and re-drilling, for a worn original bridge.
