'57 Mini Tweed 5W Amp Kit

About This Item

One-knob titan of tone
This amp is a timeless studio darling whose tiny size hides tremendous punch and versatility. The 5F1 circuit was originally meant to be a student amp but wasn’t kid stuff for long; rock’s finest guitarists hauled it off to their studios and recorded some of the greatest songs ever recorded. Clapton recorded "Layla" on it. Joe Walsh used it on "Rocky Mountain Way" and it was one of Keith Richards’ favorite recording amps.

StewMac has lovingly recreated this timeless amplifier in our '57 Mini Tweed 5W Amp Kit. This is one of our Icon Kits: loving reproductions of vintage classics.

Every time that red jewel lamp lights up, and you hear that satisfying thunk as you plug in, you'll not only tap into the magic of this very special amp, but you'll also take extra pride in knowing you built it with your own two hands.

If this project sounds hard, don't worry. We've gone to great lengths to make these kits something a complete beginner can tackle. This is our simplest kit and a perfect place to start. It comes with all the parts you'll need to complete this project in just a few evenings.

  • The cabinet interiors are genuine 3/4" North American Pine (not plywood), just like the ones made in the Fullerton factory in the 1950s
  • Superior craftsmanship on the Tweed covered exteriors with perfectly aligned seams
  • Premium quality hardware
  • Top-shelf 6V6, 12AX7, 5Y3 tubes and vintage spec Heyboer transformers to give your amp the perfect vintage tone
  • High-quality period-authentic resistors, Orange Drop caps, and Switchcraft jacks for their authentic tone and a lifetime of trouble-free use
  • Authentic fiber eyelet boards just like the ones used in the original vintage amps
  • Period-correct pushback wire
  • Top-quality 8" speaker
  • We created easy step-by-step instructions for each amp kit, breaking down every task into clear, bite-sized pieces. With hundreds of full-color photographs and illustrations, these instructions make this an easy, fun and rewarding project—even for first-time builders.

GREAT kit! Demystifies amp building for the first-timer

By

First of all, this is a GREAT KIT! Timely shipping, and all the parts neatly organized in the provided plastic-divider tray. Mine was not totally without incident. First off, the chrome plating on the chassis was AWFUL! Bubbled chrome on much of the back of the chassis. but this is where StewMac's outstanding customer service stepped in. After a brief email exchange with pictures of the defective chassis, they overnighted a new chassis to me!

The kit truly does include top-shelf parts. I measured all resistors before installation and they easily fell within 5% tolerance. As a precaution, I ordered Sprague Atom capacitors, but after seeing the included Mojo caps and reading reviews on them, I returned the Sprague's and went with the included Mojo caps.

The instructions are what really set this kit apart for first-time builders like me. It really walks you through, step by step. The one part I might differ on with respect to the instructions is the process of attaching EVERYTHING to the board before soldering. This works fine with the caps and resistors, but it gets really hard to keep the multiple 2-3" jumpers from moving around all over the place. I adapted this guidance to what worked for me: install, double-check then triple-check a few components/jumpers at a time, then solder them down. Read ahead in the manual to identify the few lugs where you do NOT want to solder -- it's pretty obvious.

Once I assembled everything, the amp powered up as advertised and was surprisingly quiet for my first-time build. I really expected, on a first-time build, to have a functioning amp, but maybe not the quietest. But this thing was amazingly quiet. Again, I think carefully following the included instructions contributed to this (short lead dress, etc.). The sound at lower volumes up to about 6 or 7 were absolutely fabulous! I couldn't believe my first-ever build was performing so perfect! But not perfect...at 10-12 on the volume I was getting weird oscillating volume. A few e-mails and a phone call with Matt (more outstanding StewMac service) gave me an idea of things to try. While re-flowing and shoring up the turret solder connections, I discovered a resistor lead had broken in two! I soldered the resistor leads together, and suddenly I was in tonal bliss all the way from 1-12! After sharing this news with Matt (and ordering some more of the offending resistor from another supplier), I was amazed that Matt had sent me out a replacement resistor! So, StewMac sent me a .25 cent resistor for what was probably $3-4 shipping cost, even though it was no fault of their own. Truly amazing customer service!

Bottom line: if you are a first time builder and might need a little tech advice/hand-holding, this StewMac kit is DEFINITELY the way to go. The sound, whether low volume and clean, or up to screaming distortion (which is really quite loud), is amazing. I previously owned another "Tweed Champ" from another builder, and it underwhelmed me as a one-trick-pony. This basic-circuit StewMac kit can do it all. Gigging guitarists might find themselves asking, "Should I just stuff a mic in front of this thing and gig with it?" YES, it's that good.

This kit is a great introduction to tube amp circuitry. The instructions were clear and the numerous pictures and diagrams very helpful. The staff at Stew Mac including Matt in the amplifier dept. are very helpful trouble shooting any problems that come up. The end result is a great little amp with a whole lot of tone. Thanks.

Phenomenal Amp Kit for First-Timers!

The StewMac 5f1 kit is as good - or better - than any amp kit on the market. I took my time and built it over the course of several nights. The directions were clear and concise, with an emphasis on safety and due diligence. This was my first amp build, and it wasn't without a few pitfalls: I accidentally soldered the speaker's positive wire to ground and it took me a day to troubleshoot. ;-)

Overall, the parts are high-quality. StewMac provides plenty of vintage-style, push-back cloth wire (I finished with extra) and the Jensen speaker absolutely sings. The tweed cabinet is impeccable.

I'd recommend that newcomers practice soldering skills before tackling this project. While the chassis has plenty of room for components, it can get cramped for somebody who is unaccustomed to using a soldering iron. Remember to keep enough wire on connections to account for possible mishaps, while being mindful of tidiness. Also be sure to purchase a high-quality 60/40 lead solder and a good soldering station.

I had so much fun on this build; a special thanks to the folks at StewMac for such a well-planned and complete kit.

I'm still in the process of building this kit, but having built other amp and electronics kits, I can say this one is very well done. The parts came extremely well packaged and are of top quality. The manual is well written and has plenty of photographs. I am completely confident this amp will work on first power-up. I'm taking my time and savoring the process of building an amp I will be proud to own.

When I saw this Kit at StewMac I order it at once. Have a long time wanted a small amp. I took the change to try build one. The only experience earlier with soldering was on potmeters, changing pickups and other simple repairs. The instructions was very simple to follow and mailed Customer Service a few times for help. I feel I have learn a bit about tube amps aswell.
Have played it with my Strat and Lapsteel and it are sounding amazing on both.

Great kit even for beginners

What a great sounding amp. I am a total novice and had never done any such electrical project before. And I can't say that this build went without any hitches. But with Matt's help at StewMac, I overcame my gremlins and inexperience and have a bench amp that I am thrilled with. So, even if you have never tackled something like this before, if you are interested in how those early tube amps were built and are looking for that great Champ sound, I encourage you to give it a try. Well worth the money.

Great Sounding Amp Kit

By

Great reproduction of a classic amp circuit! Quality components and easy assembly, perfect kit for someone new to building. A reminder for beginners, the voltages listed in the check out stage will vary by the tolerances of the components up to plus or minus 20%. Also the voltage at point 16 taken after installing the rectifier tube can be considerably higher until the other tubes are in place and add to the load. Voltage should then drop right into where the manual states it should be. Great job making it clear how dangerous these voltages can be!

A Les Paul plugged straight into this amp is simply a sound to be heard.
Great Kit!
