Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers

About This Item

Straight-up raw vintage! Closely modeled after an outstanding vintage P.A.F. set from our own collection. That sweet tone was just too good to keep to ourselves!

True vintage sound.
We christened these exceptional humbuckers in tribute to the famous Kalamazoo address where the holy grail of pickups, the legendary P.A.F. (Patent Applied For), was born.

Just like the originals, the slug coil has more windings than the polepiece coil, and both coils are unpotted. Old P.A.F.s weren't made in separate neck and bridge-position models, and their DC resistance varied from 7-9K ohms. We give you a choice: Parsons Street neck-position pickups are wound to mid 7K, and bridge-position models to low 8K.

Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers sweet vintage tone was crafted to vintage P.A.F. specifications:
• Nickel-silver cover for tone transparency
• Original 1.97" (50.04mm) polepiece spacing
• Plain enameled AWG42 coil wire
• Black paper coil tape
• Wood spacer
• Choice of Alnico 2 or Alnico 5 magnet
• Nickel-silver baseplate
• Single-conductor braided shield output wire

Your choice of original-style magnets:
• Alnico 2 for warm tone with smooth highs and a soft bottom response.
• Alnico 5 produces a clear tone with more pronounced highs and a tighter low end.
(Original P.A.F.s contained Alnico 2, 3 and 5 magnets at various times.)

Neck models: mid 7K ohms
Bridge models: low 8K ohms

Swapping pickup covers on a rare lefty Lucille

Making new pickups look old: Brand new pickups looked too shiny in this guitar that had seen a lot of gigs. So Dan Erlewine opened the old pickup and put its cover on the new one. This meant cutting the solder joint and resoldering.

Wiring a humbucker to get two sounds

Erick Coleman shows how he modified a Parsons Street Humbucker, turning it into a switchable single-coil/humbucker combination.

Great way to upgrade your pickups for the money.

I put a pair of these pickups in a Custom Tele. I put in a Alnico 2 in the bridge and Alnico 5 in the neck positions. The Alnico 2 in the bridge paired with the 5 in the bridge position give it a great balanced tone that I was looking for. I would highly recommend these and they won't break the bank.

Great Sounding Pickup at almost any price  - Quality build and sound

I put a pair of these pickups in a LP copy. I decided on an over-wound Alnico 2 (9K ish) in the bridge and ALNICO 5 (7.7k ish) in the neck positions . The ALNICO 2 has less bite than ALNICO 5 and I like it in the bridge position and it's just hot enough to not lose your high end. Nice balanced tone that is on same level of pickups that cost many times more. The one thing that really stands out is the touch dynamics of these pickups. That is always the sign of a good PUP. To me, this means the pickup responds to playing hard or soft. I play primary hard rock BOC, Van Halen, Montrose, Clutch, UFO, Sabbath ZZ Top, Sabbath, Cheap Trick...etc You get the idea. I do like other types of music too and these get a very nice humbucking clean tone . The middle position with both pickups on, sound great and found it very useful. I did the 50's wiring. 500k CTS pots with a .015 cap in the neck and a .003 cap in the bridge. I really like rolling back the tone control on the bridge pickup for slower single note things. I have to point out, this is a real joy to hear on the bridge pickup. This is probably more info than needed but I think it's important to get an idea of amps too. I have a few pedals with a little delay running through a Friedman Runt 50 and/or a Splawn Street rod. Not much that can't be covered sonically and these pickups hang right in there with the more expensive brands out there.

A beautiful sound at a reasonable price

A few years ago I took all of the electronics out of an Epiphone DOT and replaced the pickups with Stew Mac PAF's. I loved the results but time passed and I sold the guitar. My son recently returned a very nice epi dot to me and I did another complete overhaul. I wired it in the 50's style and again used Stew Mac PAF's. This, I think, is my finest sounding guitar. When you strum a chord you can hear the sound of each individual string but when you dig in they will bite! I used alnico 2 in the bridge and alnico 5 in the neck. It makes an amazing difference. These pickups are wonderful!

i have 8 Les Pauls from Gibson to Harley Benton...and i was looking for a set of pickups to get that warm but clear tone as Im not a big fan of Keith Richards or Neil Youngs tone (or lack of it depending on how you look at it). You know the one you have in your head....so i got a couple sets here is my 2018 Harley Benton Lemon Drop that i refinished and relic'd with the parsons in it...killer sound!!!...IMHO the best mid priced pup you can get

I’ve purchased Golden Age pickups before for my Strat’s and Tele’s. This is a first for a PAF style humbucker. This pickup has such clarity, warmth and depth of sound. Stew Mac really nailed it!

Great Sounding Pickups With Warmth To Spare!!!

By

I have been planning on upgrading the pickups on my left-handed Epiphone Emporer Joe Pass jazz guitar for more than a year now, and settled in on the Stew-Mac Parson Street Humbuckers to improve the sound. They finally came on sale and I took the plunge. They have done it all - increased the volume, tone, clarity and warmth of the guitar to where it compares to my Heritage 575 in the afore-mentioned characteristics! I love the definition and warmth they have added to this guitar. These pick-ups have improved the sound of a "moderately priced" guitar to the point at which I would not hesitate to play it as my main axe for gigging. Great work, Stewart-MacDonald!

Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers Are Fantastic!

By

Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers put the sound in my 1968 Les Paul that I'd hoped for since I bought it in April 1968! Originally built with single coil pickups, the guitar never had the robust sound I sought. Those old single coils made a lot of noise when I performed on stage near noise sources like lighting and the middle tones and trebles never had enough 'throat' to satisfy me.
That all changed the moment I swapped pickups (after re-routing the pickup slots for the larger hum buckers).
I couldn't be happier, as the LP now has the sounds I have only heard from other vintage Les Pauls.
This change means other guitars I own now take a back seat and I have the urge to play my oldest guitar daily.

Great for a Gibson Les Paul Studio upgrade project

By

A year or so ago I got a 2011 Gibson LP Studio in a trade. It isn't anything lovely to look at, a faded black finish. But it had good "bones". So as part of an upgrade project, I decided to try the Parsons Street pickups, along with changing the controls from the stock circuit board setup to a more traditional setup. Changed the pots to 500K audio taper (CTS) and removed the Gibson Burstbucker 5's that came stock. I always thought they had a bit too much "edge" to them, and after reading about the Parsons Street pickups, I decided to give the Alnico 2 set a try. I used them on a gig last night, and I was quite happy with the sound. I played the guitar through a Fender Champion 40 amp with a Eminence Governor speaker in it. I was playing with a Chicago style blues group, and I enjoyed the tones I was getting. The best part is being able to turn the guitar volume down, and get those elusive "edge of clipping" tones. Perhaps it is partially due to the control changes, but to my ears these pickups are a lot smoother than the ones I removed, regardless of price. I have tried many different replacement pickups from many other vendors over time...including some that are considerably more expensive. These just seemed "right" out of the box. I will probably end up getting a set with Alnico 5 magnets at some point, just to have for comparison. Pleased with the Alnico 2 set.
