Golden Age Parsons Street Overwound Humbuckers

About This Item

You asked for 'em! Introducing the overwound versions of our Parsons Street humbuckers, wound to 9.5K ohms for higher output punch.

We named these exceptional humbuckers after the famous Kalamazoo address where the holy grail of pickups, the legendary P.A.F. (Patent Applied For), was born.

True vintage sound, in a stronger dose!
Sometimes those 1950s PAFs were accidentally overwound at the factory, and when you find one of those rare ones, it has a little extra bite to its sound. To capture that tone, we keep winding these hot versions until we get a DC resistance of 9.5K ohms.

Golden Age Parsons Street Hot Humbuckers vintage specs:
  • Nickel-silver cover for tone transparency
  • Original 1.97" (50.04mm) polepiece spacing
  • Plain enameled AWG42 coil wire
  • Black paper coil tape
  • Wood spacer
  • Choice of Alnico 2 or Alnico 5 magnet
  • Nickel-silver baseplate
  • Single-conductor braided shield output wire
    Your choice of original-style magnets:
  • Alnico 2 for warm tone with smooth highs and a soft bottom response.
  • Alnico 5 produces a clear tone with more pronounced highs and a tighter low end. (Original P.A.F.s contained Alnico 2, 3 and 5 magnets at various times.)

Beautiful and solid.

I have a beautiful looking, and playing, Chibson 355. As I expected, the pups were the weak link: washy & undefined, narrow bandwidth. It was my intention, from the outset, to replace then with Gibson PAFs, but that was until I read about these Parsons Street PAFs and decided to gamble for a pair...with an Alnico 5 on the neck & an Alnico 2 at the bridge: awesome.
Warm and clear, tight...yeah. I have Teles for spank and bright, so this 355 is for woody jazz, blues, and tight funk.
The Alnico 5 at the neck has just a little bell tone, and I can roll that back using the tone. Output is the perfect hotness for me, rolling back the volume a little cleans it up.
Anyway, these things are a piece of work. Thank you.

Great-sounding PAF-style PUs!

Just replaced the very inadequate pickups in a PRS Santana SE with a Parsons Street overwound 5 in the bridge and a normal 2 in the neck. The guitar sounded great unplugged, with great resonance and sustain, but went very dead and generic-sounding when plugged in a Marshall 1974-x, so I knew something was very wrong with the electronics. Interestingly enough, both SMS measured lower KOhms than the PRS units, but are pumping much more out of the guitar! They transformed a dead-sounding beautiful instrument into one that sounds as good as it looks.

More objectively, the SM units have that smooth output you get from SD '59s, but with the top-end sizzle from Burstbuckers 2 and 3. Sorry about that Seymour, but from now on I'll be buying Parsons Streets units for that vintage tone. Can't see why I should shell out more.

As a bonus... they are double-cream under the nickel cover! I'd love to have my choice of zebras, all-cream or all-black, though.

Exceeded expectations

I through these in my goldtop I just finished building going in with the expectation that if I didn't like them, then I'd be ok with it since it's going into guitar I have no intention of selling and I could replace them later. I also went with both alnico 5's in bridge and neck positions and.... I'm so glad I did! I was impressed by the clarity and attack with the bridge position and the neck position retained that same clarity with a subtle hint of natural warmth. They also handle pinch harmonics great and through heavy distortion they're pretty awesome. Overall, i would highly recommend these versus spending an extra 30 to 40 bucks per pickup on the more notable brands when you can get an a set of these and still get the same quality.

Very Happy with these pickups

Golden Age Parsons Street Alnico 5 Neck, Overwound alnico 5 Bridge. Couldn't be happier, the response and clarity is fantastic. Respond very nicely to volume and tone controls. Suggest experimenting with pickup height, lower than usual for me was ideal for these. Also Customer Support was very helpful prior to ordering.
This is in a 2004 Gibson LP Studio upgraded from what i think were Burstbuckers

Awesome vintage sounding pickups

Replaced the Gibson Burstbuckers in my Custom Shop 339 and what a difference! The Burstbuckers sounded kind of wimpy and bright. Not enough bite for me. These Golden Age Parsons (overwound) sound absolutely great! I was a little skeptical since they're so cheap compared to other big name brands and expensive boutique pups but I took a chance and am really really glad I did. No need to spend hundreds of $$$ on fancy name brands. These are just as good or BETTER!

Great tone, but...

I’ve purchased a few of these because I love 5he sound but the covers are pressed on with no wax or tape or silicone between the pickup and the cover. They squeal like crazy! Had to take each one apart, pot it, secure the cover to the bobbin, re-solder. Still, worth the $35 each!
