Love the Tone

By

Verified Buyer

I bought these as an experiment. I hadn't played a guitar with true Lipstick pups in 40yrs. I put a single coil in the neck position and a humbucker in the bridge and wired them with a simple 3 way toggle switch. The neck sounds warm and mellow. The middle position brings both pups together in parallel and delivers a nice full round tone. The bridge delivers a surprisingly bright clear tone that I really love. To date I have had 5 different guitarist play the guitar I installed them in and all 5 really love the sound. I will definitely use these again on future builds.

hoping to upgrade my Ibanez

pick up was too long to fit my Ibanez S series, and i didn't want to route the hole bigger, wired it up in the mid position and couldn't get that strat sound with a 5 way switch in the 2nd and 4th position, but it did sound good on it's own,i would return it,but i had to file down the ends to get it to fit,i'll just install it in my frankenstrat,i'm sure it's a great pickup just couldn't get the chimney sound i wanted

Very Versatile Pickups

By

So far I've used these pickups in a couple of lap steels (both single coil and humbucker), a baritone guitar (s.c.) and an electric tenor guitar (s.c.). They have sounded excellent in everything! For the money, they are very hard to beat if you like the lipstick look (better made than a more expensive brand I tried which fell apart in my hand...), and I'm looking forward to trying them in a regular 6-string.

Great Humbucker

The Golden Age Lipstick humbucker sounds really good.I have another brand of lipstick HB, and the Golden Age sounds fuller, with more power and harmonics.

From elegant to raunchy

Installed it on my Hagstrom HJ500. I can get a very nice tone jazz tone with the tone muted or down to 1 or 2. With the tone up to 10 it gets very sparkly and it has good chime.
It sounds really raunchy with gain too for country blues and so on.

A decent pickup, but no "wow" factor.

I just completed replacing a Carvin AP11 with this GA Lipstick pickup (in a Carvin Bolt) and I am a little disappointed. But maybe I was just expecting too much. The GA is an entirely competent pickup, but is no more "glassy" or "jangly" than the AP11. I have it mounted in the neck position.
It is also slightly lower overall output than the AP11. I might wax poetic that the GA feels a little more "spongey" than the AP11, which felt a little "harder" on the ears.
Keep in mind that I am not complaining, and I am going to leave the GA in place. It just really didn't make much difference in sound that I would call "improvement". It looks really cool though, and that is important. :)
One odd thing: The GA now humbucks with the bridge pickup rather than the middle, as is normal for a Strat. So I don't know if it is GA or Carvin that has the "reverse poled" standard reversed. It still give the expected "out of phase" sounds in the combo positions.
Overall, a good strat pickup, just not a "holy grail" pickup.

What a sweet surprise!

By

Years ago I bought a Carvin Strat-style kit guitar. But as I accumulated more guitars it fell down the list. Recently I saw the ad at SM for the Lipstick pickups and I thought I could turn this old guitar into a surf machine and have some fun. So I ordered the pickups, had them installed and I just got it back. HS!!! What a surprise. I thought I would get thin highs and twangy lows but instead I've got highs with lots of sparkle, chunky mids and a good twangy low while keeping the familiar Strat style sounds. The guitar also came equipped with a micro switch that allows me to use the 1 and 3 pickups like a Tele. This guitar has lots of vibe - everything from 'Walk Don't Run' to 'Soul Man'! This guitar is now a blast to play. Thanks Stew Mac! -Paul

Fantastic

I installed one of these lipstick's in the neck position of one of my Gordon Smith guitars. I'm very impressed witt the clear and crisp tone from this pickup. Very well balanced throughout the ranges, 'flutey' with a touch of vintage twang. Works very well blended with the P90 that's in the bridge for funky sounds and surprisingly good for bluesey soloing when played on it's own. On paper it's very low output but don't be fooled, there's plenty of rich sounds to be had if you make the most of the volume and tone controls of the guitar. Great take on the single coil. Great/appropriate price too. just goes to show you don't need to spend a fortune to get great sounds. Pickups aren't rocket science

A perfect choice

As I was looking fo a Midi-Guitar with Lipstick Pickups I found only one solution: I bought one of each item and had it built in a Godin Freeway SA as neck-pickup (humbucker with humbucker to single coil switch) and and as middle pickup singlecoil.
What should I say: This instrument now absolutely meets my requirements for a Midi-Guitar with Lipstick Pickups and a Standard Humbucker in the neck-position. Absolutely great. Perfect sound, perfect play, perfect neck, perfect anything. A perfect extension to my "working guitars".

Thank you at Steward-McDonald for these excellent pickups with an also excellent service.
