About This Item

The most accurate reproductions of '50s Gibson® humbucker bobbins for new builds or restorations.

"I used one of these to replace the crumbling bobbin of a 1960 P.A.F. that had been mishandled. It was a perfect match in every way, even down to the tooling marks."
Erick Coleman, guitar repairman and StewMac tech advisor

Each bobbin measures:
2.640" long x 0.695" wide x 0.375" tall

When building pickups with these bobbins, use our humbucker covers.

I like these.

I have a small stash of old working and non-working humbuckers, and I used these bobbins to rebuild a pair of dead PAFs. The original bobbins were shrunken crumbling and and warped to the point that they looked awful and also no longer held the polepieces at the correct spacing when the covers were placed on. These bobbins were used with the enamel #42 wire to build new coils, they look great with the cover off, and fit perfectly with the covers on.
The appearance of the bobbin finish is that they are slightly dull, not fully glossy, and this looks suitable for restoring or repairing an old pickup.
I then used another set of bobbins to make a pair of double cream humbuckers for one of my personal guitars, for those I decided I wanted the fully glossy look on the bobbins, so before winding the bobbins I held them for a few seconds on my buffing wheel that I use at the end of my lacquer finishes, and these bobbins quickly buffed out to a perfect gloss. So my new handmade double creams have a brand new look compared to the slightly duller look on the previous PAF repairs.

I will gladly use these as my go-to bobbins for hand building my own pickups, hopefully I can also find a source of taller bobbins for hotter output windings that use alot more wire.

I just ordered a couple of sets to see how they looked. Very poor moulding with deep sink marks. Colour was about the only thing that was ok. I won't be ordering these from stewmac again. Other suppliers have much better ones than these. It's a shame really.
Cheers
