Emerson Paper-In-Oil Tone Capacitors

About This Item

Vintage specs. Responsive, warm tone. Genuine handmade tone caps from our friend Mitch Ingram at Emerson Custom Guitars and Electronics.

Mitch's latest design is made in the USA to military specs. They still have the kraft paper-in-oil construction like the vintage Russians, but these are hermetically sealed metal tubes with glass ends so the value will not drift over time.

Capacitors are energy-storage devices that filter the high frequencies. A cap lets the tone control roll off the treble response, progressively warming the tone. The higher the value, the more bass output from the tone control at its "zero" setting.

A cap wired to a potentiometer creates a standard tone control, as explained in this article: How a tone control works

Value Common use
.015uF - 300V   With neck position humbucker for the Clapton "woman tone"
.022uF - 300V Humbucker tone
.047uF - 300V Single-coil guitars, many basses

in love with the Tone

By

I put one of these on one of my guitars and was wow'd by the warm yet open quality of the tone. On my second guitar I went with an orange drop to save money, and after hearing a blah boring tone, I changed it for one of these, and again I was in love. These emerson paper in oil make my tone knob something I actually look forward to adjusting.

I replaced the .047µF ceramic capacitor in a Strat-style guitar with an Emerson cap of the same value. Due to the physical size of the capacitor it was a tighter fit inside the cavity, but not unmanageable. However I had similar results as another review I saw here; there is little tonal change until rolled off about 2/3, when the tone changes very abruptly. I thought this might be a bad capacitor, but I put an Emerson .022µF in a Gibson Les Paul Junior with a hot P-90 and have exactly the same situation. I do not know if this is a paper in oil thing or an Emerson thing.
Despite this apparent non-linear tonal roll off, the capacitors do sound very good...to my ears they are are more open and airy than the stock ones. Just something to be aware of. Overall I am satisfied, just surprised by the non-linear responsiveness.

Great Cap

I frankly don't Know why a capacitor with the same electrical values could affect the tone of any given setup, but after installing these in the tone circuits of two different Guitars I am convinced that there is something to the construction of the cap that does make a difference. For Me I get the tone and range from these that I was looking for. Pricey but worth it for the result!

New sound for my guitar

By

I put these in my Fender Tele. This guitar has always sounded so good, now it sounds so much better. This has been my favorite guitar for years because of the quality sound; it has improved so much - like it's on steroids. The tone is so clear even when it's turned very low; the sound is so warm and not muddy or muffled. The quality of my sound greatly improved. These caps are the best; give yourself and your guitar a little love.

So glad I installed this item in my guitar. It made a significant difference in tone. I recommended to friends and have installed it in their guitar and they are quite happy with the improved sound that they can't stop playing their guitar.
