S-M overall

Verified Buyer

This is general praise for Stewart-MacDonald (S-M). I am an accomplished hand woodworker but a first time musical instrument builder. I bought a relatively inexpensive S-M “fiddle” kit. I was immediately impressed with both the quality of the wood used and the care with which it had been machined. I could not have done better myself even if I had started from scratch with expensive wood blanks of my own choosing. (For example, the back plate is book-matched and beautifully figured “tiger” maple. The front plate is very tight-grained spruce.)

The building instructions supplied with the kit are very detailed, clearly written, and include many helpful diagrams and pictures. Nonetheless, there are always certain minor questions that arise. For these, S-M offers “technical advice” from a very competent crew of experienced builders. My queries to them have always been answered promptly and informatively.

In short, it is a rare breath of fresh air to encounter a company such as S-M that offers quality products and honestly stands 100% behind them.
