Unbleached Bone Saddles

Unbleached Bone Saddles

Stewart-MacDonald is your source for quality bone!
Bone is traditionally favored for quality instruments. Our unbleached bone is harder than bleached white bone, and has a mottled cream vintage look. Its hardness and density contributes to good tone, it polishes well, and it allows more precise filing.

Blank saddles have oversize length and height, for custom shaping in your shop. They're ready for trimming, filing, sanding and slotting.

Shaped saddles will save you a LOT of work—a head start for the novice, and a timesaver for the busy shop. The sizes have been carefully researched, and accurately radiused, so that minor trimming, slotting, and sanding are usually all you'll need to do.

Good news: our super-hard unbleached bone saddles are available with B-string compensation too, so you'll save even more time!

Unbleached bone saddle

Never had any issues with any of stewmacs bone products: nuts saddles or bridge pins. I prefer the creamy yellow colour on my guitars and being slightly harder than the bleached version is a bonus! It’s the only material I use for saddles and nuts.

Nice and Faded

I've made my own saddles for a while, mostly using blanks like this. I've been using Micarta for a long time, but I wanted to go back to bone. I've heard that unbleached bone might have the edge over bleached for tone. Also, I like a little off-white color to my bridge parts, so I tried this. Haven't cut it down yet, but it looks great. For bone pieces I've been cutting pieces from a cow bone dog toy, and those are not always consistent. This is not only easier but lots more consistent.

Nice saddle blanks

These are perfect for new or old builds and restorations. I happen to like the vintage look and these, along with unbleached nuts, add another layer of the aged look without any effort.

Just what I needed

What do you do when your saddle breaks on your vintage acoustic Yamaha and they do not make placements? Call Stewmac!
The guy was so nice and found a bone compensated saddle that would come close.
I had to customize it a bit but what a relief to know Stewmac was there for me plus the bone saddle improved the sound.

Mediocre - and from a company who should know better

By

Neither the Gibson nor Martin saddles were trued flat -- both were cupped when checked against any straight edge or sanding plane. And, though the saddles both were cut intentionally longer than we would need in order to allow us to shorten them to just the exact length needed, there was *zero* additional thickness provided to ensure a properly snug (though not *too* snug) fit into slots with slight variations. Also, while described as 'intonated', the termination point on these for all strings but the B is somewhat lazily (and cheaply) on the frontmost edge of the saddle -- i.e., the low E isn't compensated any further back across the saddle's thickness than the G -- and as a result the low E on every instrument fretted noticeably sharp, which is why everyone (else) goes the extra mile to provide the attention to detail that we need.

Most things from StewMac are done well, but these really fell short.

They were very helpful

I'm a total novice with guitar repairs/mods, and the StewMac rep who took my order was very helpful in advising me about the proper tools to use to fit the saddle to the narrow bridge on my '68 J45 .

And this item arrived a day faster than they estimated!
