Too-tight fit in a 1/8" hole

By

This was quite good, except it was just a teeny bit too large in diameter to fit a 1/8" hole. I measured it as 0.135" diameter.Of course, a little bit large is a whole lot better than a little too small. Ideally though I would have preferred a diameter of about 0.1252".

Just what I wanted.

I was given my Vega Regent banjo in 1962 by my step grandfather and it was missing a 5th string tuner and nut. I bought and installed the tuning peg and stuck a carpet tack into the hole for the 5th string nut and played it for a few years; it worked just fine. Fast forward to today as I brought it out of retirement and took it into the shop for some needed work. After getting it home I remembered the nut was still that 50+ year old carpet tack. I fouind Stewart McDonald on line and bought the proper nut. It was a bit tricky getting it installed but I managed and it works and looks just fine. I would have been happier if it already had the groove cut into it which is the only reason for not giving 5 stars. I'm glad I found you folks. You are a great resource. Thanks.

Great replacement nut!

A superior replacement for the plastic 5th string nut that came with my old Gibson long neck. Same diameter as the original. Just extracted the old, popped in the new, and cut a string slot.

The nice thing about this nut is that there's extra material so you can get a proper got before gluing it in.

I have used 5 of these bone 5 th string Nuts so far. Super product and easy to use. I made a 1/8 hole in a 1x1 block of pine, tap the new bone nut in and file your string groove in the center. I have found that 1/8 in drill bit is the perfect tap in size also for the neck hole. no need for glue.

I had ordered 8 5th string banjo nuts and they were shipped UPS. UPS showed that I got them. However, I never did. I called StewMac and they apologized even though it was not their fault and they sent out another order by FedX.

Great customer service.

Fifth String Nut Replacement

Old nut fell apart. Couldn't get a grip on the old one to get it out. So I shaved the old nut flat on top using a razor blade. Then used a 1/16 drill bit and turned it with my fingers to slowly make a 1/4 deep hole into the center of the old nut. This allowed me to pull the old nut out with the drill bit. Put the new one in and used a SM Nut Slotting .013 file to make a slot (or you could put the slot in the new one before inserting it). First time and success!
