Concert ukulele kit

By

Never built an instrument before. Very good kit. Good instructions, wood, and parts. A router table made quick work of triming top and bottom. It took 4-5 days but only 20 or so hours all with hand tools except for router and drill. Looks good and more importantly sounds good. I think I'll build couple more for Christmas or something. It was that much fun. I wish SM had the exact kit with high grade wood. I would lay out more $ Koa if it came with all the parts of this great kit. Attaching the neck was the hardest part, double check the hole placement.

Turned out Great!

A friend told me about the kit so I got one (I play guitar but never uke!). Really enjoyed making it, the printed instructions and the videos were super helpful and clear. HOWEVER...measure the hole placement for the neck dowels, the measurements in the instructions were off. Luckily I could see that they didn't look right BEFORE I drilled so I could correct it before drilling into the body. And the small bit of bracing that fits in the "X" didn't line up with the pattern, so I made a new one. Aside from that I loved making it. I changed the profile of the headstock and lasered a design onto the top, and added a pretty mosaic pin (one I made for knife handles) on the back of the neck piece. So happy with all of it, and best of all, it sounds good!!!

I'm looking forward to assembling it. All the parts look well-made, and accurately cut.

I'm expecting a great result. I hope I do it justice.

Great kit except for bridge measurements

Had a lot of fun wit the tenor ukulele kit. By the time I got to glueing the bridge I had great faith in the directions and didn’t think to check the measurements. For tenor it says 16 11/16. Checked and measured four times using three different methods as the bridge placement is so critical. When I finally put on the strings I immediately knew there was something wrong. Checked the measurements and no, the bridge didn’t shift while glueing. Went to the StewMac fret calculator (very cool that it is on your website) and found that the saddle should be at 17.1 inches (it’s exactly 8.5 to the 12 fret). That would put the saddle about .4 inches back from the edge of the bridge. In my kit the saddle was only .156 inches back. I have been able to move the saddle back another .1 and that helps but you can still hear intonation issues if you do anything above the fifth fret. I should have checked the measurements prior to glueing but this really needs to be fixed in the directions.
On the plus side the neck action is perfect which I didn’t expect with a glue on kit.
