Picked up the S model a couple of weeks ago...pretty straight forward, price was good, delivery was fast....Only thing i'd like to change is the wood the body is made of..it's a multi peace construction. since i wanted to do a stain and wax finish, it came out OK but one peace of wood would have been better.... other than that, things went well....sounds good...lite to handle...plan on doing another one soon.......

This one could have been better

This is the 3rd StewMac kit I’ve built and the first one I’m not completely satisfied with. Don’t get me wrong. It is still a great playing guitar if you put in the work. But with the individual kit I received there wear a few small things. First, I wasn’t able to do the sunburst finished I had planned one because there were a few sizeable knots in the wood that I didn’t want showing through. Simple enough, I just picked a different color. The second was the temblo, I will need to switch it out. The first time I tried to use it the trem arm broke off at the threads. So I’ll need to drill it out and replace it. But I’ll probably just switch it out with a Floyd rose. Anyways, that’s my two cents.

Good kit... upgrade the hardware if you want a great guitar!

This is a good kit to work with, but mine had a bad neck. StewMac, however, have the BEST customer service in the industry, so they took care of me. I feel so good about it that I am ordering more kits, as it is fun to build these guitars. I am, however, upgrading the tuners, pickups, and bridge. I would be less than honest if I said that those were great, as they really are pretty inexpensive parts. You CAN get a playable guitar with what comes with the kit, but you will be happier with some better components.

Want to build another!

This was my first build kit and I really enjoyed putting it together. All of the parts fit nicely and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. I plan on upgrading some of the parts down the road and look forward to my next build!

Very nice kit!

Bought this for my father's birthday. He had already built a tele from a cheaper ebay kit. The quality from this StewMac strat kit was so obviously better in every way. Quality wood, fits together well, and it includes many tools, parts, and instructions that his other kit did not. I had been planning to get a tele kit later for myself on ebay, but after seeing this strat quality I will buy mine from StewMac.

First kit build

As the title says, this is my first kit, so I'm not entirely sure what to expect and have nothing to compare it to, but my initial reaction is very positive. Note: I haven't started the build yet, so these are all initial observations.

The neck seems straight and the frets seem well seated. The edges are a tad rough and will require some dressing, but nothing terrible. The body seems to be of good quality, generally well finished. The neck and body are clearly matched based on the numbers written on them and the neck fits nicely into the body cavity.

The hardware seems to be of good quality on first inspection. They do include 2 sets of strings, one loose set for the setup and a packaged set of GHS Boomers (09-42) for the finished product.

The pre-wired pickguard seems a little cheap, but given that you can spend more for a pre-wired pickguard than the whole cost of the kit, I'm okay with that. A lot of forums and blogs suggest upgrading that part anyhow, so I'm not complaining - just an observation.

I'll try to post an update and pictures after I get underway, provided I won't be embarrassing myself.

One other suggestion to StewMac: the large label on the outside packaging that clearly identifies this as a kit guitar seems like an invitation to the porch pirates and occasional dishonest delivery person. I think you would be better off shipping it in the plain brown cardboard box. I know what it is: no need to advertise it to the world.

Very impressed and not sure how they do it

I've built guitars for a long time from scratch, but when I saw this kit go on sale for practically nothing compared to what they give you, I just had to get one. I've always wanted a Strat, but somehow always played Gibsons, and I thought this would be a good way to get the sound and feel without having to sink a fortune into a vintage guitar. I'm still in the pre-assembly stage, but I am impressed with the quality of the work on the parts I received and the materials. The only thing I've done so far is replaced the knobs...

Easy build.

Love the finished guitar. Changed the nut and I would now put this guitar up against almost any store bought S style guitar. I'm serious as this thing plays and sounds great.

S-type Guitar project with excellent results

This was a first time build for me so it was a learning process, but the detailed instructions were helpful. The guitar body and neck were good quality. I upgraded all the hardware and electronics to authentic Fender parts, so not sure about that part of the kit quality. I finished it with products used for gun stocks and it came out great with a hand-rubbed finish look. Overall, I was very pleased with the quality of the kit - it may not be up there with my American-made Strat. but still a very good guitar and a fun project.
