ZipFlex Abalone Purfling

About This Item

Now it's easy to install beautiful abalone purfling.
Creating shell purflings used to mean breaking pieces of shell and installing them one by one. ZipFlex® is a brilliant idea that makes that unnecessary.

Great results, even if it's your first inlay job!
ZipFlex is select green abalone shell on a flexible base that bends to any curve. Place it between wood outer bindings and glue them in as one piece. Zip!—you've inlaid the soundhole!

These shell colors—pastel reds blues and greens—are a good choice for accenting any wood. We especially like the way they stand out in darker tonewoods like rosewood and red cedar.

Available in 3 widths
Depth: .055" (1.4mm)
Length: 15" (381mm)

ZipFlex purfling was developed by Kevin Ryan, of Kevin Ryan Guitars.

Tip: When installing with super glue, apply a thin coat of shellac or lacquer in the channel before gluing to keep the super glue from darkening the surrounding wood grain.

This is my favorite purfling for sound hole rosettes. It is always consistent in width and thickness, and has enough flexibility to make it very easy to use.

Amaxing stuff!

ZipFlex is incredibly easy to use compared to hand-fitting shell. It is very flexible, and fits around everything but the tightest cutaway horn without breaking. It is quite uniformly beautiful, and thick enough to permit modest scraping or sanding back. It is expensive, especially when compared to shell or ablam strips shopped throu the net, but worth it for the grief it prevents.

The only way to Re-top a D-45!

I’ve used Zipflex on many re-tops.  A soundboard replacement is not always cost effective if there is a lot of pearl or abalone.  The labor to cut and fit small pieces is tedious and time consuming.  Installing Zipflex is just like laying any type of plastic purfling into the channel. I just finished a Martin D-45 re-top and used it on the rosette, outer edge and fingerboard extension. Installation time, about 10 minutes.  I like to lock in the pearl with cyanoacrylate after it’s installed, but be sure to seal the routed channel with lacquer or shellac first.

I bought a couple for some simple rosette rings on a pair of dreadnaught guitars I'm making. Simple to inlay and they add this simple sophistication to the guitars. Well worth the investment.
