ColorTone Black Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

About This Item

The easiest way to spray a professional finish!
Produces a beautiful traditional nitrocellulose lacquer finish, without elaborate spray equipment.

Black Gloss is a deep opaque black, exactly what you want for a solid black peghead. Top it off with Clear Lacquer for a deep, sleek gloss.

Sunburst Black is semi-opaque to transparent. This black has a warm hue, just right for the outer edge shading of a sunburst finish.

ColorTone® Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable finish. Add clear coats of ColorTone Clear Lacquer for a deep, sleek gloss. Convenient 13-ounce spray can.

ColorTone Lacquer can be sprayed over smooth unfinished wood; over sanded basecoats of grain filler, and over ColorTone nitrocellulose Sanding Sealer. It's ideal for touch-up work, or for an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a finish. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns however, and more sanding of the clear topcoats may be needed for a level finished surface.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal the wood before the black coats are applied. Spray only enough black to hide the wood; most of the final finish thickness should be sprayed with clear gloss topcoats.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available! California Residents: Click here for Proposition 65 information.

Wait for good weather

My first attempt was in colder weather, results were spitting and long dry times. Second time, the weather was 68 degrees and sunny, much better results. It levels out nicely as it dries. It looks darker than the original black (on a 2002 Gibson LP Jr) but original finish might be somewhat translucent. The ColorTone looks more opaque to me.

Had some issues

By

I received my order and ran through my usual steps of: warming in water, making sure outside temp was above 70, and prep accordingly. However, no matter what I tried, this can would not spray evenly, and consistently. It would stop spraying, and then spit, and spatter. I phoned in to customer service yesterday and they are sending out another can to try. The rep on the phone was very helpful;. Will let you know how the 2nd can works.

Great for small jobs

This NitroCellulose lacquer is great for hitting small repairs. The solids content could be higher, but several coats gets around that problem.

You have to be careful as the can empties the pressure drops and coverage accuracy drops.

Great customer service

When I used the black aerosol lacquer I warmed the can first and start/stop spraying way off the instrument to get an even spray but unfortunately the lacquer didn't have consistent spray pattern and random splatter. Tried it on several test surfaces to confirm it was the can and not my technique. Called customer service and after explaining the problem we concluded it must have been a poorly manufactured nozzle. I was sent a replacement can and used it without problem. Great 5 star customer service resolving my issue (other than wasted time having to re-sand down to sealer coat to get the splatters) but I usually use Behlen aerosol lacquers and feel they apply a better coat, with better spray pattern consistency resulting in overall less effort than the Colortone lacquer. Nothing to say about how good color matching is because it was used on a new build.

Great Stuff

I bought this paint for a relic project along with the other colors for a 3TSB. This is great stuff. It goes on super glossy and stays that way. It is also easily workable to get out any runs, dust, etc. But, like all lacquers it is soft so it scratches and wears off very easy. Great for my project, but you might want poly for a long lasting durable finish.

ColorTone Black Spray

Sweet. One good coat for a headstock. Haven't tried it for bodies yet but this black looks like Nitro when spayed. Black has a weird quality to it usually. Not this stuff. What I have been looking for in "specialized products" elsewhere and it was right under my nose all along! "Black" seemed too simple of a description. Great color!
