ColorTone Touch-up Marker

About This Item

Genuine nitrocellulose guitar lacquer, easy to use
Easily repair minor finish dings and scratches. When that heartbreaking first ding appears on your new guitar, these convenient ColorTone touchup pens come to the rescue. No brushing, no spraying!

The applicator tip on the marker is reversible. One end has a flat surface for broad strokes. Remove the tip and flip it around for pin-point application.

Use Clear Gloss for repairs in clear finishes, for spot-sealing tints, and to mask bindings before you stain the surrounding wood. Aged Clear has a subtle tint to match old finishes.

The tinted lacquers are transparent. They're great for touching up sunbursts and finishes where the wood grain shows through. They match the colors in our ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquers.

Blond and TV Yellow are vintage classics. Sometimes called toners, these finishes are semi-opaque to allow some grain to show through.

The Black pen is the quick fix for scratched pegheads, and Sonic Blue is a match for the classic Fender solid color of the same name.

A word of caution:
Nitrocellulose lacquer melts into itself, making it ideal for nearly invisible touchups on lacquer finishes. But that also means there is potential to disturb or damage the existing finish. Experiment with the markers on scrap wood to get a feel for their flow and application before attempting a repair on your guitar.

Warning! Lacquer under pressure
Our new touch up pens differ from the felt tipped marker type we previously stocked. These pens contain nitrocellulose lacquer that is under pressure. It is very important to relieve the pressure built up from shaking it prior to use by pressing down on the tip with the pen in the upright position. This will prevent the pen from flooding your work with excess lacquer.

As close as you can get

I used the pen to touch up a couple of dings on my sunburst 60 s Gibson acoustic. I practiced a little before applying to the guitar . Pretty close match and had no problems with it running . I dabbed in several layers so to speak.

Perfect tool for the task!

By

I purchased several of these markers for doing just what their name suggests: touch-up work. The marker colors I have used most (tobacco brown, red mahogany) have contributed to (nearly*) indistinguishable repairs on vintage instruments.

I much appreciated the caution and warning provided in the product description, as I was able to avoid making a costly mistake from the outset. I would add that, should you feel the need to "press" the marker against the finish, resist the temptation. Fill the marker tip with colored lacquer by pressing against scrap material, a workbench, anything other than the instrument. For all but the tiniest of flaws, gently "touch" the marker briefly to the area you are coloring. Build in layers, rather than attempt to color fill all in one pass.

* nearly = If you didn't know where to look, it is doubtful you would see it

Perfect match

This was a perfect match for my '84 Guild D-15 mahogany. Easy to use: it took care of 35 years of dings and dents in about 15 minutes

This is an excellent touch up product for sunburst shade nitro cellulose touch up and whilst not perhaps as invisible as say airbrush touch up' it does a good job at a reasonable price.

Vintage Amber is especially handy for matching patches in old ivoroid binding

By

Verified Buyer

I've used a variety of ways to make new ivoroid binding bits match existing vintage bindings. This particular touch-up marker did a convincing job. With a little practice and by adding some dirt and dust it's possible to get the uneven, worn look of old grimy finish on new binding patches. The wick tip delivers the finish a little unevenly which is actually an advantage in this particular application. With practice it is possible to get more even delivery when needed. I also tried the Tobacco Brown and Red markers. Very useful for spot touch-ups. I'm interested to see what the shelf life on these is though. I suspect that if they aren't used fairly fast they will clog and/or dry out. At this price I can't afford to use them on one small job and then have to throw them away.

these touch up pens work fine; there is a bit of a learning curve to see how they react. polish out to a nice shine. There is a good video on fixing dings here on the Steu Mac website.

Before and After Gibson F4 mandolin

By

Verified Buyer

I purchased 3 ColorTone Markers (Tobacco, Vintage Amber and Clear) to repair a significantly pick-gouged area on a 1906 Gibson F4 mandolin. I practiced on some scrap wood to get a "feel" for the markers and found them very easy to use. I applied multiple layers of lacquer to build-up the gouges, wet sanded with fine grit, and buffed the repair with StewMac Swirl Remover Polishing Compound. I couldn't be happier with the results. The selection of colors made it easy to match the colors of this vintage instrument. See the before and after photo!! I recommend this product.

Nice Pens-but!

These are nice color touch-up pens. But, make sure you "color test" them on some scrap before use.
