Big Leaf Maple, Acer macrophyllum
Big Leaf Maple is found all along the Pacific North American coastline, where the lush, humid climate can produce trees up to 12 feet in diameter or more.
More traditionally used for archtop & electric guitars, violins, and mandolins, Maple has nevertheless gained popularity among flattop builders both for its workability and tonal properties.
In many ways Maple is much like the "lightning" to Rosewood's "thunder". Where Rosewood offers thick low-end rumble, Maple offers a fast attack with a quick drop off. Maple is perfect for creating a voice that can be heard apart from the rest of the band.
Just when you thought maple couldn't get any better. Bigleaf Quilted Maple is prized for its stunning blister quilt and the highest grades often exhibit a visual 3D appearance of being "puffy". Each is unique in its own way, but nothing is quite like a silky white, perfectly symmetrical back with quilting so intense it feels like you could pop one of the bubbles if you touch it.
Maple works well with hand tools or power tools and is an excellent choice for builders who use traditional shop methods or more modern CNC tools. Care must be taken on highly figured pieces to limit chip out, but razor-sharp cutters and light passes usually prevent these issues.
And when it comes to finishing, bigleaf maple is extremely versatile, and often only limited by your imagination, from classic stained sunbursts, to two-toning (where dark stains are applied and sanded back before a brighter color is applied), to recent vertical shading. The beauty of bigleaf maple is often enhanced by color and finishing.
