Sapele is a fantastic tonewood that produces all the tone you've come to expect from genuine mahogany at a much better price.
Sapele, Entandrophragma cylindricum
- Back halves: 8-1/4" x 22" x 0.155" (210mm x 559mm x 3.9mm)
- Sides: 5" x 31-1/2" x 0.130" (127mm x 800mm x 3.3mm)
Sapele is often referred to as one of the "African Mahoganies", but it is neither a Swietenia nor a Khaya.
Due to the large sizes of the trees and commercial availability, Sapele is an inexpensive tonewood that has many visual and tonal qualities of Genuine Mahogany without the CITES export restrictions.
Tonally it is dry, fast, and articulate. It is perfect for flat pickers and players looking to not get lost in a sea of ringing notes or overtones. Many major manufacturers and custom builders love Sapele for both its tonal properties as well as its easy workability.
Sapele has many different visual properties, from plain to traditional rope figure, to intense curl, to outstanding quilt. Many of the most intense figured sets are still priced far less than you'd expect for similar figure in Honduran Mahogany.
All WOODSTAX items come with our standard 100% guarantee. If you are unhappy with the wood once you get it simply return it in its original, unworked condition for a full refund or exchange.
