English Walnut (also known as European Walnut) shares many similarities with its North American cousins. However, English walnut has a slightly paler, less course visual appearance and a color pallet that ranges from light tan to chocolate brown, with lots of dark brown and black ink lines.
Tonally walnut leans more toward the sound of mahogany—a dry, clean, fast attack that is thick, but not falling all over itself with overtones. This is a perfect choice for high speed flat picking or rhythm style chord accompaniment.
This is the perfect wood for beginning builders. Not only does it look and sound amazing, but it bends like butter, it's resistant to cracking, and machines beautifully with both power tools and hand tools. And the best part is the transformation it takes on during finishing. The beauty of walnut simply explodes under finish—colors become darker and richer, and figure that is hard to see with the naked eye pops out.
