European Maple is an excellent tonewood that's moderately priced and is well suited to many musical styles.
European Maple, Acer pseudo-platanus
- Back halves: 8-1/4" x 22" x 0.155" (210mm x 559mm x 3.9mm)
- Sides: 5" x 31-1/2" x 0.130" (127mm x 800mm x 3.3mm)
Like North America, Europe has several species of maple, but Acer pseudoplatanus is generally the species best known for old-world carved top instruments, archtops, and some classical guitar models.
It's slightly harder and denser than North American bigleaf maple, but its color tends to be whiter, without the pink and grey highlights you sometimes get with bigleaf. Flamed sets tend to be more consistent with even curl from edge-to-edge and across the entire length of the board.
European Maple has been a favorite of archtop makers for decades and it works equally well for flat top steel string acoustics.
In terms of workability, European Maple is stable, and it bends, planes and machines well. Due to its hardness removing scratches during finish prep does require patience and methodically working your way through the grits.
Its tonal performance is similar to its North American cousins with a quick focused attack and fast, articulate voice.
