Mandolin Fingerboard

About This Item

Flat or compound radius playing surface! Our kiln-dried Ebony and Indian Rosewood fingerboards are accurately slotted for 29 frets and 13-7/8" scale length.

The .023"-wide fret slots are ready for our fretwire. Each fingerboard is supplied unprofiled (rectangular); you can simply cut it shorter to fit an A-style mandolin.

Available with traditional flat playing surface, or with modern compound radius surface for lower string action.

Dimensions: 1-15/16" x 12" x 13/64" (49.21mm x 304.80mm x 5.16mm)

Compound radius fingerboard: The playing surface radius gradually changes from 7-1/4" at the nut, to 10" at the 12th fret, to 12" at the 29th fret, to allow lower string action and easier playability. 13" bridge saddle radius is recommended. Important:
Ebony is usually not uniformly black.
We offer Black Fingerboard Stain, as used by Gibson®, Paul Reed Smith® and other makers for darkening the streaks on ebony fingerboards, bridges and peghead overlays.

I usually make my own , but I’m gettin old and lazy so I ordered the ebony compound radius .
The ebony was nice but the mill job horrible , way too thin and frets were slotted so deep , that there was less then a less then a 1/16 th of wood left. As soon as I saw it I knew it wouldn’t work. Foolishly I decided to give it ago anyway , pressed one in, the next press ,the board split in half.
I thought what an idiot for not just returning it. I explained the situation to customer service and they sympathized and refunded my money on it. Technically they probably didn’t have to cause I went ahead and tried to use it. So an A plus for StewMac standing behind the customer , but bad for quality control. I would no longer order any fretboards , I’ll stick with cutting and milling my own

warped (too thin)

I ordered this fingerboard thinking it would be straight as an arrow. Not so: it was curved down its length so that when placed on a table there was a quarter inch of air underneath. They graciously sent me a replacement, but it wasn't any better. They cut the material so thin that I suspect that makes it warp easily. I give them 2 stars because their customer service is stellar, but I'm not going to bother asking for another replacement. This was my first purchase from StewMac and it will probably be my last. I don't have time for shoddy materials and shoddy replacement materials.

Great quality, however I would prefer Rosewood as it is less brittle and less inclined to split during fretting. However you do not supply Rosewood, slotted and radiused boards... Ever considered these?

I've used 12 inch radius on my last two mando fretboards and am ready to try a compound radius such as Collings puts on their instruments. When I received this fingerboard I was dismayed to find it only 1/8" thick at the edges. Even when allowing for trimming back to the tapered edges only brings it up to 5/32". Not thick enough to look appropriate with side dots. Since I already have their great aluminum 12 inch radius sanding beam, a paid to ship this fingerboard back and will do my own compound radius
