Golden Age '52 Body for Tele

About This Item

Perfect reincarnation of one exceptional 1952 Telecaster®.

In the early days, Fender bodies were made on shop tools, by hand. Small variations from one guitar to the next are the result of this handwork, and every so often a "Best of the Best" vintage Fender turns up.

Our '52 Body is a flawless recreation of one of those great Teles®. It's shaped exactly like the original, but we've left the final sanding and finishing for you—just as if you were in Fender's Fullerton workshop back in the day.

Average weight:
Swamp Ash: 4.50 pounds (2.0 kg)
Clear Pine: 3.50 pounds (1.6 kg)

Choice woods for Golden Age Solidbodies

Swamp Ash: We've selected best quality Southern swamp ash, lightweight and toneful. Our swamp ash has striking grain like the fantastic '52 Tele we started from.
Nearly seamless grain matching: our swamp ash pieces are sawn and selected for superb grain matching. This gives the almost seamless look that's so important under transparent finishes.

One-piece Clear Pine: Related to spruce and cedar, pine is a very light softwood gaining lots of attention for its great tone. Golden Age pine bodies are made from Eastern White Pine that is grown, harvested, and processed in Ohio. This pine is clear and straight-grained, milled from trees we've found that will yield full-size bodies in one piece. (Lumber yard pine won't do.) No need to worry about pine sap seepage: we kiln-bake each piece until any pitch inside is thoroughly crystalized.

Knotty Pine: We also make a Knotty Pine version with quirky character, for making a guitar with a wild side!

Shaped like a true '52
The shape of the body and electronics cavities exactly match the 1952 original. The body is 1-3/4" thick with the correct 1/8" radius. The small router hump next to the neck pocket, and the 7/8" flat at the output jack, are quirks we retained for vintage accuracy.

Golden Age 52 Tele Details

Holes for mounting the bridge are drilled. Neck mounting holes are started in the traditional 4-screw placement, it's easy to finish them out with a hand drill. Our Replacement Neck for Tele Guitar is a perfect fit.

#0452 Swamp Ash has holes for string-thru-body that are fully drilled and routed to 3/8" (10mm) diameter for string ferrules.

#0451 Clear Pine has holes for string-thru-body that are partially drilled, giving you the option of using a top-mounted bridge instead.

Ready for final shaping, sanding and finishing.

Golden Age: 1952 ash sanded telecaster body. well made looks great. stew mac staff very helpful, professional, good response/communication, and they stood up to the plate. .... i thought stew mac made an error with the body as my telecaster neck would not fit into the neck pocket, a local guitar specialist, discovered that, it was the neck that, was the error, not the body. ... ( my apologies to stew macdonald ) stewmac gave a full refund almost strait away, i called stewmac to delay the refund, and that i would get an expert guitar specialist on the case, once solved, i called stewmac, to take back the full refund. 11/10 for stewmac....

Pine Body

This eastern white pine body is flat-sawn from a very large log. On mine the edge grain is mostly on the sides and the top surface is almost featureless even when wiped with naptha. That might or might not matter depending on the desired finish. All dimensions are as stated in the catalog, including neck pocket depth. It is REALLY light! Mine weighs 3lb. 7oz., just under the stated average weight. The wood is very soft, but that's to be expected with white pine. The end grain is surprisingly rough, perhaps due to a little router tear-out. The end grain will need grain filler before sanding it smooth, but a clear grain filler should enable getting a smooth surface without sanding away a lot of wood. The rest of the surfaces are non-porous and seem ready for a final sanding. I bought the body primarily to make templates from, but after seeing and hefting it I can't wait to turn it into a lightweight modern Tele partscaster.

Excellent Workmanship

Everything is cut correctly. The neck pocket it tight and transfers vibration from the neck really well. After putting this project together, the set up went smooth and the action is perfect, even with the relief at .012 and the string height at 3/64 in. The body is center seamed and matched so well you have to look at the butt of the guitar to tell that is a two piece body. Tone tapping the body right out of the box, it produced a very clear and defined note that held true with the final project. This guitar sings with vintage tele tone. I highly recommend this product. The only improvement I would make is to have the grain filled and ready for finishing.

It's The Little Things That Make The Difference.

I've built several guitars over the past two or three years. Purchasing guitar bodies can be a hit or miss affair. The Swamp Ash body from StewMac has been the best. Neck pocket and pickup routes are spot on and match the Tele specs perfectly. I'm very happy with this guitar and will buy another someday soon.

Not a hot body

Somewhat disappointed as I was expecting straight grain and I am not sure what is the implication of having mold on the wood. Regardless, what I received was not the best example and would be of concern when considering future purchase of this item.
