Beware

By

Verified Buyer

This is a decent enough kit with average parts and wood (mine came with a chipped headstock and an extra part ). The issue is the instructions are absolutely terrible. The basic instructional drawings don't match the kit, and there are no real photos or even drawings of the finish product. So you are on your own to figure out how to assemble this unsuual instrument with no visual help (not like you can go down to your local Dulcimer store and lookout a real one). For the money this should include good assembly instructions. If you are not familiar with these instruments you will be spending hours searching photos and assembly videos.

Interesting

I have made 7 StewMac uke kits this year. Built 4 basses and 1 uke from scratch. I found this Dulcimer project interesting, but not up to the standards for quality control and easily understandable instructions I expected. Can't recommend this kit for a novice woodworker.

good job

this kit is a good way to be introduced to dulcimer building. And it results in a playable instrument. May not buy again but the kit and the experience is well worth the price.

E-a-s-y!

I've built two of these kits.I found them to be extremely easy to build.
I ended up with two fine instruments that have a great sound. The elements
of the kit were all good quality. If you've ever put together a model plane, car, etc.
this will be no problem.

Put the kerfing in Stewmac!

Good set of wood but.....
Leaving the kerfing out is NOT up to Stewmac's fine standards. I expect a change! I post this for anyone building according to the instructions. My photo show the kit partially completed. The key to building a good first instrument is NOT how it looks, it is how it plays. Put the front on first and make sure you take this measurement AS you install the back. Mine had a definite bow after installing the front. I let a glued back straighten the neck by simply checking and weighting or clamping....Maybe yours is flat BUT KNOW as you put the back on. All frets must touch the straight edge. Also...the instructions are part of the sale....other tools, like clamps and bandsaws help like a lot.

Lots of fun and a nice result

I had an enjoyable few days working on this Dulcimer Kit. It was my first ever instrument build. I did purchase some kerfing and the spruce soundboad as well. I didn't think the instructions were difficult to follow but and I have fairly little woodworking experience. I finisshed it with tung oil. Very easy and practically fool proof. Now if I could just play "I'll Fly Away" like the pros do I'll be happy.

Beware!

I would not buy this kit again on a bet. Poor instructions, insufficient bracing, no kerfing, shoddy peghead detail (tearout at edge of scroll required filling). Not remotely satisfied with this kit for the price paid.

Good kit but 1 minor issue

By

Verified Buyer

I don't usually buy kits but, as with several other Stewmac kits, I wanted to build some small instruments quickly for a local arts and crafts event that my guitar shop sponsors.
The dulcimer kit went together quickly, though I found that the sides were over bent giving a very narrow waist, so I re-bent them to make the waist wider. I had to change the construction technique a little as I wanted to bind the soundboard and back. Overall this would be a very good kit for a beginner.

Some good, some not

I finished mine and I'm happy with the result but it did take some information that is not in the instructions. I installed kerfing on mine, not in the kit. The string gauges are not given and they don't tell you the order. I measured mine and found two .010s, one .013, and one .023. I found out from the Internet this is standard and followed instructions found online. So the kit will make a nice dulcimer but you either need previous building experience or the ability to research online.

The Dulcimer - a very beautiful instrument

By

It was real fun to build the dulcimer, you just need to take your time and be thorough. It has a very nice sound and if you are captivated by Appalachian music, this dulcimer is really a must. I recommend it highly as the first instrument building project, and I cannot wait to build the next instrument, perhaps a five string open back banjo ? I would love it !
