Flatwounds on a Strat

By

Verified Buyer

I bought a used Fender Deluxe Strat that had flatwound stings. They did a lot to mellow out the tone. I replaced the original (heavier) strings with .10-.46 gauge flatwounds. The guitar needed a complete re-set-up to maintain intonation. Bending notes is not a problem, doesn't feel any different. Keep in mind that music stores don't usually stock this gauge of flatwounds. I'm going to try nickel strings instead, but if you want to go through the time, money and effort, flatwounds will mellow out your Strat

Perfect gauge for my strat.

I've used Chromes for some time, now, but always heavier gauges (11s and 12s). These give me 90% of the tone of the heavier sets, with better playability and less fatigue on my Fender-scale guitars. I can bend the G a whole step if I have to. I never purchased strings here before, but StewMac's price was the same as a bulk string dealer I've been using, and StewMac is usually faster.
