StewMac Plunge Router Base

About This Item

Our sturdy base turns your Dremel into a compact plunge router—perfect for inlays, routing saddle slots, cleaning fret slots and more. The advanced design gives an unobstructed view of the cutting action.

It's very simple to set the precision depth adjustment, then plunge and raise the bit exactly that amount. Each turn of the knurled micro depth stop gives approximately 1/32" of adjustment, to a maximum depth of one inch.

    Designed for stringed instrument work
  • Excellent control
  • Clear visibility
  • Maneuverable for accurate freehand work
  • Works with our Saddle Slotting Jig

Sturdy, compact, and adjustable
You can plunge-rout an inlay cavity that's precisely compensated for the thickness of the pearl and glue, for minimum sanding later.

The ball grips give you excellent control for freehand routing and easy operation of the plunge feature. The built in LED light bar gives you a fully lighted view of your work. There's even a built-in nozzle for attaching a Mini Air Pump to continuously blow away the dust—you'll rout inlay cavities more precisely, for a better fit requiring less filler.

Installation is easy.
Simply unscrew the threaded plastic collar on the nose of the Dremel, and screw on the Precision Router Base. Its 3/4-12 thread fits:
Dremel 100, Dremel 4000, 400XPR, Professional, MultiPro and most corded models made since 1986
Black & Decker Wizard and RTX
Our Foredom custom handpiece

Works great, especially with the bright led light on the work surface.

Just the rigght size

When I first started inlay I had a plunge router that was too big. The Stew/Mac plunge router base is the perfect fit and is easier to use. It also can be used to rout out cavities at the right depth eliminating a lot of sanding to bring the inlay piece smooth to the surface.

A great precision tool!

This plunge router base is a very high quality precision tool. Perfect e.g for inlay work. It works with great precision and accuracy and I especially value the routing depth fine-tuning adjustment . Perfect!
The only small change I would suggest is to move the otherwise excellent light to the other (back) side. Now it is partly blocking the visibility to the item under the work. It is pretty easy to do this mod by yourself.

Great depth-setting feature

By

Like others, I have the basic model and hadn't used the new one until this morning. The depth-setting function was perfect. I am really happy; my inlay went in fast and accurately. Only improvement I would suggest is for Stewmac to design a retrofit for the light -- it's big and kind of in the way of viewing the work.

great depth feature

Like others, I have the older base, too, and bought this based on the video. Being able to get a really accurate depth adjustment is a very useful thing for inlay work. I have to agree with a previous reviewer that the light might not be the best engineered item on the base. Having a light is really good; placing it in the upper portion of the sight window is not so good. Sometimes you need that area to best be able to see the line you're routing to. I used it for the first time yesterday, and am, on balance, very happy I did buy it.

Handy base to have

By

Nice base, quality build. Two things I was not a fan of, the threaded handles are kinda weird to use and they like to spin with the vibration of the dremel tool if you don't have your hand on it. Plunge into your work and find out the handle spun, now you have to thread your handle further to lock it into place.
Second: Not the greatest place for a light...having to look under the light to see what you are doing. First thing I noticed as soon as I pulled it out of the box, well thats a dumb place to put the light! I drilled and tapped the other side for the light, works great now!
At the end of the day its a pretty handy base to have in the shop.

Perfect Inlay tool!!

By

I hesitated buying this base because of the price and I have the old Stewmac base. Am I glad I bought this tool. It is solid, flat, easy to adjust and with the I can do just about perfect inlays. I plan to use it for many other uses. It is worth more than the price since the accuracy and time I save fixing mistakes. I highly recommend this tool.
