Precision Router Base

About This Item

A more stable way to support your Dremel. Our sturdy, compact base is the best way to hold a Dremel for freehand routing, inlaying, widening fret slots and more.

Made of machined steel, brass and aluminum, it features precision cutting depth adjustment with large thumbwheels to eliminate guesswork.
Designed especially for stringed instrument work.
  • Excellent control
  • Easy installation
  • Accurate freehand routing
Sturdy, compact, and adjustable.
Each turn of the large knurled thumbwheels adjusts your Dremel's cutting depth by .035" (.889mm). You can rout an inlay cavity that's precisely compensated for the thickness of the pearl and glue, for less sanding later.

Tall twin handles give you excellent control for freehand routing, and you get a good view of your work. There's even a built-in nozzle for attaching a mini air pump to continuously blow away the dust—you'll rout inlay cavities more precisely, for a better fit requiring less filler.

And here's a tip from Dan Erlewine: clamp the Dremel and router base upside-down on your workbench, and use the bottom of the router base as a mini drum sander, as Dan Erlewine did for a Gibson L-1 archtop bridge in this issue of our Trade Secrets Newsletter.

Installation is easy.
Simply unscrew the threaded plastic collar on the nose of the Dremel, and screw on the Precision Router Base. Its 3/4-12 thread fits:
Dremel 100, Dremel 4000, 400XPR, Professional, MultiPro and most corded models made since 1986
Black & Decker Wizard and RTX
Our Foredom custom handpiece

Router Base

Fits Dremel well. Great quality product. Have not had the opportunity to utilize this tool yet, but, I know it will work well. Hooked it up to a medical nebulizer, which has a low air pressure, and it puts out an excellent flow of air. I'm not a Luthier, but, I do a lot of inlay work on Cigar Box Guitars and jewelry boxes. I recommend this product.

I was hesitant...

By

I am learning to create inlays and own 3 routers and a Dremel. When I first saw this, I felt it was overpriced and I could do without it. I was wrong. It’s worth every penny. I find it considerably easier to control the delicate cuts required for inlay work. Thanks, Stew Mac for a well-made, accurate helping hand.

It took it out of the box, and one minute later I made this picture.

This is great for me, because I have shaky hands.

Just What I Needed

I am a fairly new Dremel user. I am using it for engraving and routing wood. I tried the Dremel router attachment and it was extremely difficult to see what I was doing. I purchased the Dremel fan attachment which helped blow away sawdust/chips but I still just could not see my work. I purchased the StewMac Router Base and I love it! I wouldn't be without it. It has help my work improve greatly.
I do have a problem with my bright work lamps reflecting off the shiny base into my eyes, but solved that by putting painter's tape on it where needed.

Fussy thing to use

By

Verified Buyer

I found this base to be a hassle to get set up correctly. All the screws tend to vibrate themselves loose over time, including the hex screws holding everything together. One fell out while in use, causing the whole base to swing into my bit. Kind of a safety issue. Best to just use a router suited for the job rather than convert a Dremel into one.

Count on Stew-Mac, this base is exactly as described and fits perfect (4000). Much more durable than the Dremel version(s) and easy to clamp, and guide. Easy instructions for setup and heights. The additional mounting locations make this wonderful for the bench overall.

I've purchased and return 2 others due to the awkwardness of setting depth of cut. Found it easier to maintain parallel axis. Appreciate the "blow hole" and visibility , smooth operation of thumb screws, my only wish it were punched out to accommodate the flex shaft

I'm new to inlay work, but I recently purchased the Stew-mac Precision Router Base and can't imagine how one could ever do inlay without it. It is a dandy little tool that gives you tremendous accuracy and control when cutting inlays. One of the best bangs for the buck amongst all my woodworking tools. I love it!
