Carbide Downcut Inlay Router Bits

About This Item

The best for inlay work and more!
Solid carbide lasts far longer than steel, and reverse spiral flutes cut downward for cleaner, "no fuzz" edges in routed cavities.

To use our 1/8"-shank bits in your laminate trimmer's 1/4" collet, see our Adapter Collet.

Use the larger bits for removing wood in the middle of your inlay work, and save the smaller bits for the fine details. The fine detail bits are fragile, for routing intricate details only.

What type of bit do I need?
In our shops we use both, depending on the job and the type of wood we're working on.

Downcut Bits cut a very clean top edge of the rout with some fuzz around the bottom. These are perfect for jobs like cutting purflings and soundhole rosettes on softer woods like spruce and mahogany. We also use them for cutting inlay routs where you want a clean top edge with less possibility of grain tear out.

For the cleanest flat-bottom rout, use Upcut bits.

Get all the bits you need
We have a set of all 5 Downcut bits to add to your precision routing arsenal, and a set of all 10 upcut and downcut bits so you’ll be prepared for any job and any type of wood.

We have all the sizes you need to tackle your next job:

Great for small channels

By

I had some black/white purfling around the outside of a custom tail piece that disappeared after sanding it smooth. I was able to rout a small channel and place another piece of purfling to fill in the missing piece. A steady hand comes in handy as well.

I used the bit for cutting perfling channels around the sound hole of my ukulele. The bit cuts a clean channel and require very little clean up. The perfling fits the channel perfect.

Good inlay bit!

Just be careful of your depth of cut and feed rate depending on hardness of wood and you'll be ok. Have broken a few by trying to go faster than I should. Might want to have a few on hand as waiting a few days to get more could set you back a bit with your schedule. No, I don't work for Stewmac :)

Very Satisfied

By

Verified Buyer

I recently purchased the 1/8 upturn inlay bit and found it was dull right out of the box. I attempted to cut a ledge for a brace in the kerfing and it burned right away. However, when I called on the product Stewmac sent another one out immediately without a problem or requesting I return the bad one. Over the years I have appreciated the professional service that Stewmac has provided, from it's ordering service on line, to it's prompt filling of orders and it's handling of problems that may occur. It is my go-to company for all my luthier needs.
Thanks Stewmac!

I got 3 different sizes and they worked so well I can't even believe it. I recommend going slow with small advances so you don't get off track. I highly recommend these!!
