Amana Tool Miniature Ball Bearing Router Bits, 1/4" Shank

About This Item

These extremely small, carbide-tipped bits are designed to be used in areas where a full size router bit isn't practical. They're just right for cutting the tight corners of pickup cavities, or scrollwork on headstocks (as seen on D'Angelico/D'Aquisto style guitars or F-Style Mandolins). These bits are also excellent for light duty template routing.

TIP: Don't cut the entire profile with this bit. Start with the larger bit then go back with this mini bit and hit just the spots where you need the smaller radii.

Cutter diameter: 3/16" (4.76mm) or 1/4" (6.35mm)
Cutter heights: 1/4" (6.35mm), 1/2" (12.7mm), 3/4" (19.05mm)
Shank diameter: 1/4" (6.35mm)

Also available with a 1/8" shank for use in Dremel Rotary Tools.

Absolutely Awesome Bits

By

I use these bits all the time on the normal router table, for things like cutting pickguards. I also use them in the Colt Router for routing pickup channels on guitar bodies, e.g. for Jazz Bass pickups, or anything else with tight, 1/4" or 3/16" corners that normal bits won't trace.

But here's a great use for these bits you may not have thought of: miniature router table!

To make this, you will need the 1/8" shank, 1/4" wide x 1/4" tall guide bearing bit that Amana Tool offers. The 1/8" shank will fit into a Dremel tool, you mount that in the Stewmac Precision Router Base, clamp it down to a bench with some Stewmac Soundhole Clamps, and you have an awesome miniature router table for working more comfortably with small parts.

I used this setup today to make copies of Stratocaster flatwork. Strat flatwork is tiny, and on a normal router table, forget it unless you're trying to lose your fingers. With this setup, it's actually manageable. Even the top flatwork (though I wouldn't go any smaller than that, and BE CAREFUL!).

I hope Stewmac carries the 1/8" shank bit(s) in the future. This whole line of router bits is absolutely awesome, and turns making templates and routing cavities a joy instead of a nightmare.

One more tip: freehand routing templates might be a pain, but if you do it with these bits, you'll be guaranteed that they'll be able to trace the template afterwards. Nothing worse than filing and sanding and shaping a template by hand only to find that the router bit is unable to trace your handiwork.

Anyway...good to see these on Stewmac. Combine them with some other Stewmac tools as I've done and you will have a true little monster in your workshop. When you need them, there's nothing that can take their place. So glad that these exist!

Great quality & razor sharp edges. I used it for pickup cavities as well as battery cavity and finally for routing bass strings ferrules using a template. Couldn’t be more accurate than this.
Highly recommended.

I'm in love with these Amana bits, I can finally use my hand router to drop f-holes wherever I want using a template. The bearing action is smooth, and there really isn't much else to say- they work as advertised, and the quality is top notch. I'm a happy customer!

Put it to use immediately on some sound holes. Super clean, easy, and *finished* cuts. Another permanent addition to the shop.
