Peghole Reamers

About This Item

These professional luthier’s reamers aren’t like hardware store versions. One side of our Peghole Reamers is round and smooth. This keeps the reamer centered so the hole stays truly round—essential for tuning pegs!

  • Easy to use
  • Smooth control, no chatter
  • Perfectly round holes

Standard Reamer is most often used for installing guitar tuners, enlarging holes in pickguards and lots of other tasks. The 2-degree taper matches the tuning pegs on full-size violins, violas, banjos and dulcimers.
2-degree Taper: from .200" to .375" (5mm to 9.5mm)
Cutting Length: 5.63" (143mm)

Large Reamer fits double-bass and cello tuning pegs. This big reamer comes in very handy for lots of jobs in the shop.
2-degree Taper: from .312" to .625" (7.92mm to 15.88mm)
Cutting Length: 7.88" (200.15mm)

Made of quality high-speed steel with hollow-ground cutting edges and comfortable wooden handles.

For bridge pins and endpins, see our Endpin Reamer.

Super clean cut

Wonderfully sharp and precision ground for absolute control—no chatter. Take your time as you learn to cut with this reamer. It works very quickly, but maintains clean, truly round roles.

My favorite use is reaming 2° tapered holes for plugging oversized guitar or mandolin tuner holes. Pairing with plugs cut with a violin tuner shaper you can get perfect, void-free plugs.

Yes, I too used to try to hack it with a hardware store reamer. You and the instruments you work on deserve better.

Excellent tool, strange sizing

Wonderful tool to use - sharp, precise and comfortable. Even with a mere 2-degree taper, it's surprising how little application is needed to go from "too tight" to "just right". I just wish the small size went a little larger to accommodate the taper on Gotoh tuning machines - having to get the much costlier large model for the sake of half a mm was a bit annoying! If not for that, 5 stars.

Prefect tool for the job

I purchased this tool to expand the holes on the head stock to replace vintage tuners with sealed style tuners. It took some elbow grease but the end result is well worth it. Not only did I get the perfect hole but also it did zero damage to the instrument as in no cracks in wood or paint. Also used this tool on a pickguard to expand the holes for the new pots installed. A must have for serious and accurate repairs.

Great quality reamer

I used this standard size Peg Hole reamer to oversize some holes for new tuners, then cleaned the hole up with the Stewmac Peghead bushing reamer whch was the exact finished size I needed. This Peg Hole reamer is nice and sharp and worked great except the finished hole size I needed was just a tad larger then this tool can provide and the larger version of this tool I simply too big and pricey for my needs.

I put this purchase off too long. Drill an undersized hole and use this tool to get a perfectly angled tightly fitting tuner hole.
