About This Item

Spend less time filing fret ends!
This is the best tool for trimming the ends off fretwire.

A Stewart-MacDonald exclusive, our custom-made steel cutter has improved features you won't find on hardware store nippers.

The jaws are specially hardened for fret work, and they're profiled and flush-ground to cut the wire close to the fretboard. The result is a cleaner cut without pulling the wire, so you'll need less filing. Longer rubber-coated handles allow better access to the frets over a guitar body.

1" (25.4mm) jaw width, 8" (203.20mm) length.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Nice, Long Handles

I like these cutters. I try to be careful about buying specialty items but, I'm glad I bought these. The handles are long and perfect for cutting fret wire, which can be tough to cut. These get close enough to the fretboard that minimal sanding is required.

These are the jammie!

I do 90% stainless steel fret jobs in my shop and these fret cutters are my best set of several different brands. I’ve probably been through 20 SS fret jobs with my latest pair and they show no signs of damage or breakdown. I wish they made the same pliers with smaller jaws for really tight spots like uke s and mando s but they do the job. Get some! -Slamo Custom Guitars

Great tool for the job

Does what is in the description. Just make sure you dont use it on anything much harder than frets, they chip in small circular bits and they aren't really usable after.

Well designed, but not for stainless steel frets

By

The fine folks at Stewmac sent me these fret cutters for no charge, and unasked?? After my original pair failed while making a set of stainless steel frets for a bound fingerboard. Undercutting the tangs were too much for the cutters. If you don't use S.S. frets , they will last for years and do an excellent job. I would have rated them 5 stars except fot that. Stewmac customer service is 5stars plus. Thanks guys. Russ Parker, Peterborough Ontario.

These cutters work great. Sharper than my old ones, and well ground for close cutting. saves a lot of time filing fret ends. I love them.

Redesigned - no longer Flush Ground

By

Verified Buyer

I bought this to replace a 20 year old flush cutter from another supplier.

Unfortunately this tool has recently been redesigned and can no longer be called a true flush cutter. The jaws are not ground flush as shown in the catalog, photo, and How To Video . There is a 1/32" gap which leaves much more tang to file after trimming the frets. (See photo the Stew-Mac tool is on the right)

When I first received it I thought it was not ground properly and requested a replacement. Customer service told me it was re-designed to make the tool more durable for stainless steel frets. I decided to try it on a stainless refret. Since the jaws are so large you're forced to cut at odd angles to get to the last frets on a guitar. This caused the tool to fracture on the first use. The jaws are just under 1 5/16" wide not 1" as listed .

Customer service was great about replacing the cracked tool no charge. They need to update the marketing materials to match the product.
