About This Item

Create smooth, planed surfaces using your drill press
Our Safe-T-Planer is the affordable way to add a planer to your shop. In your drill press, it planes wood to any thickness, leaving it smooth and ready for sanding.

Plane large or small pieces
The Safe-T-Planer cuts a path 2-3/4" wide. Large surfaces are handled by making multiple passes.

    Use the Safe-T-Planer for:
  • Solid guitar bodies
  • Necks and pegheads
  • Peghead overlays
  • Nut and saddle blanks
  • Fingerboards
  • Unjoined guitar tops and backs
  • Unbent guitar sides

High speed steel cutters
The Safe-T-Planer is machined from aluminum with a steel shank. Its three high-speed steel cutters are heat-treated for durability. Each cutter features a spare edge, to double the working life.

Fits any 1/2" drill press chuck. Comes with instructions, including how to make a simple plywood planing table for your drill press.

Replacement Cutters are sold in a set of 3. These cutters fit the StewMac Safe-T-Planer, and are not compatible with other brands.

Width of cut: 2-3/4" (69.85mm)
Cutter depth: 1/4" (6.35mm)
Overall diameter: 3-1/8" (79.38mm)

A bit of a learning curve but it works

I don't make musical instruments. I mostly make furniture. I inlay thin strips of wood and was looking for a way to easily dial in the thickness of the wood to fit into a groove. This tool can do that. The fence and vacuum help. To get the strips smooth, I found that having the table parallel to the cutter in all directions is important, take off small increments at a time and pass the stock through slowly. Usually the leading edge and the trailing edge don't come out as smooth as the rest of the piece. That seems to be because as a thin piece is fed in it tends to vibrate until it comes out the other side when you can apply pressure on it. It's a very good tool.

I wasn't sure about how this would work, but once I put it in my drill press...and tested a few pieces of wood, I was overwhelmed at how great this works! I have very limited space in my workshop and this is exactly what I needed to be able to plane small pieces! I highly recommend it!

I purchased this T-Planer one or two years ago and for the first time had to replace the cutters. I used this tool many times for fingerboards and am very happy with the performance. Like any other great tool, once you have it, you will find other uses for it.

It works as well as they said it would. I thought something that narrow would leave a rough edge, wrong. It is well worth having.

My brother bought one of these Safe-T Planer's,too. He was able to make corrections to my banjo peg head, safely and easily. He reports that it also worked wonders on planning tops and bottoms of a diy Ukulele. I have found that I need to get a drill press with a locking quill. Otherwise, you have some rough adjustments to make to get full value from this planner. If you have any ideas about how to set up a drill press w/o quill lock, please forward those plans.
