Neck Pocket Routing Template for Fender

About This Item

Create perfectly shaped bolt-on neck pockets.

Accurate template placement is easy—crystal clear routing templates allow you to see the guitar body underneath. Simply align the template's laser etched centerlines with the markings on your guitar to get the placement right every time.

StewMac's improved templates are now thicker with smooth laser-cut edges. Correct depth measurements are etched right on the template, so you don't need to puzzle over cavity dimensions, we've done that work for you.

"These improved, thicker templates mean I don't have to shim or double up templates to get contact with the router bearing."
—Erick Coleman, guitar repairman and StewMac tech advisor

Create precision cavities every time:
Align the template's centerlines with those you drew on your guitar. All you need is Double-stick Tape to keep the template in place. Use the Bosch Colt Router to lower your Ball-bearing Router Bit into the wood and make several shallow passes until the bearing rides smoothly along the template edge. When the bearing can ride against the cavity wall, remove the template so you can rout to the recommended depth engraved on your template.

Neck Pocket Routing Templates are for routing the body cavity to accept a Fender-shaped guitar or bass bolt-on neck. Each sold separately.

This is my second one. Because the first one was thinner than this one the bearing on the router bit burned a couple bad places in the plastic rendering it useless but this one worked really great.

DONT SKIMP ON NECK POCKETS!

Tapered neck pockets must be perfectly aligned with the bridge or your guitar project will become Flea Market Material. Being able to see though allows you to align with marks and features of the gutar. The straight line down center is extremely helpful. The template will cut exactly 2.220" which happened to be EXACTLY perfect fit for my Carvin neck. Fender necks at 2.190" will need the tape on the inside of the template. Oh what fun it was to snap the neck into the perfect pocket taper - and I mean it couldn't have fit better. So why 4 Stars? Well - even though Stew Mac recently beefed up the thickness to 3/8" - the template - in my opinion - works best with bottom up router tables not top down routing. Even with my little router carefully straddling the pocket, the open corner will sag with router weight. You have to be extremely careful. So what I did was shim up and level the open end of the template from the table. I had to skim .010" off the bottom of the pocket to correct this tiny mistake. This is my fault not Stew Mac - and they can't make this thing too expensive either. If you have to do neck pocket work whatever you do, don't skimp here!

I bought this to make a pocket on a unique build. I made the body from alder, but I don't make my own necks. I ordered a Fender lic. telecaster replacement neck, and this template helped me make a perfect pocket. It ended up being a little larger than the neck, but I think that's because I didn't let the wood acclimate enough before routing. I would recommend this to anyone who suffers from measuring anxiety like I do. Hope this helps.

These thicker templates are just fantastic... No flex whatsoever, so your neck pocket will be even every time. I added 3 layers of the orange binding tape to the inside edges to get a press fit for the Mighty Mite neck I was using, I would have liked to have not had to add any, but this does give you the option of using a standard neck with thicker lacquer if that's what you're into.

I've found this template is also great to double stick tape to my router bade for routing out cavities in Tele Thinline bodies, etc. I'm very glad I bought this, and I can see it lasting a very long time.

That was money well spent. I went long enough without a good quality J/P bass neck template. Service was great, shipping was lightening fast. Even to Canada.

Nice Template

I like these new thicker StewMac templates. The only issue I found was that some necks, including my '72 Mustang, don't exactly fit the shape of the curved Strat end. The template is a little flatter. But I'm using this for my own necks, so I will make them fit.

I was pleasantly surprised by how heavy-duty this template is. The clearly etched centerline makes it easy to lay down on a plan or body template. Quality piece of kit!
