Gurian Three-in-one Fret File

About This Item

Designed by master luthier Michael Gurian.

When we're asked to recommend just one fret file, it's gotta be the 3-in-1. It's been popular since Michael Gurian designed it over 20 years ago. The angle in the shaft lifts the handle up away from the guitar, protecting the top. Since it has 3 interchangeable cutters it works for all fret widths, from basses to mandolins.

Steel shank, wooden handle. Overall length is 7" (178mm).
Each burr is 1-7/8" (47.63mm) long.

Replacement burrs sold separately.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

I like this tool a lot. Dressing of the frets became a very easy and satisfying job with this file.

Works as expected.

I've only used the largest size insert so far, but it worked very well. The bent handle makes it much easier to reach and work frets near the body of the guitar. I used it on a set neck instrument where I was not able to remove the neck to work on the frets. Made quick work of the job. Tool is well made with a comfortable handle. The inserts are easy to replace when needed.

Works just fine

Handle feels right in the hand the offset is comfortable and intuitive. Recommend buying the spare burrs as they dull quickly.

I’ve used these for first time in conjunction with John Bogdanovich’s fret levelling kit. Thus tool is especially helpful ensuring each fret is level along its length as well as rounded.

Fun with Fret Files !

After leveling the wonkey frets on my brand new Blue Ridge BR-163 A, , I needed to crown the flattened frets . This file did a bang up job ! Now the guitar is as it should have been . You really do " get what you pay for " !

I really like the feel of the handle and because I use the mid sized file the most I purchased an extra one for later.

Gives a consistent shape easily

This fret file is a reasonably priced tool to crown frets. The three burrs (insert Goldilocks joke...) covers most fret sizes. The tool itself is easy to maneuver, using my RH to cut and the LH to apply pressure evenly. I was impressed with how fast the procedure went. After polishing, the results are very satisfying. One review mentioned clogging. I would recommend a "file card" to keep this (and any) file clean. I cleaned the tool after every few frets, a necessary step. Recommended for occasional use. A pro might want to invest in a diamond file.
