Quarter-round Fret File

About This Item

Shapes the sides of the frets. This unique fret file lays flat on the fretboard to shape frets from the sides.

Quarter-round concave filing surfaces are at each edge of this unique fret file. The smooth flat underside minimizes fretboard marring while rounding the fret ends.

Each smooth-cut filing surface is 4-1/2" long and extends approximately .080" above the fretboard. The file is 3/8" wide, and is fitted with a turned hardwood handle and brass ferrule.

Designed by master luthier Michael Gurian.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Not your average file

I work on guitars for fun and no other reason. Being new to refretting, I move slow and don't have the feel as do most "real" luthiers. Starting out with full crowning files from StewMac (both standard and diamond) but was having trouble seeing what I was doing, again, lacking experience. The Quarter-Round file I'm reviewing give me the ability to "sneak up" on the crowning process while maintaining a visual of my progress. Even when I become more proficient with the full radius crowing files, I still see a lot of uses for this file, as well.

Im new to guitar rebuild and like to do things by hand. crowing frets on old and even new ones was problem until I received this file. the trick is to go slow and lightly. does great job and all frets have the same crown. nice looking and feel good.

Great File!

Good file. I must first state that my experience is limited in fret-work. I'm just now getting comfortable with it. Have 3 crowning files. The medium triangular file, a double sided non-diamond file and the quarter round. I haven't got the hang of crowning with the triangular file yet, but I can see that file being great once I get the feel for it. The double sided file shapes the fret very easily, but since I can't see the top of the fret all the time while using it, I tend to be less accurate and sometimes take too much off. Do that one time, get that one fret too low, and you have to start all over. The quarter round file is very easily controlled just by leaning it into the fret to varying degrees, so I can control the shape more than with the double sided one, not as much as the triangular one. Of course I can see what I'm doing at all times and it works great for rounding the ends also. Should have bought this one first, because it may be the last I need to buy. Used it last on this parts-caster build. Sonic Blue nitro!

The descriptions states "it lays flat on the fingerboard" if I do that it does not touch the frets. I have to stand it on edge.
